The Hawkins gang is heading back into the Upside Down’s shadow. Netflix has released the official trailer for Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Season 2, with the animated spinoff returning Sept. 17 — and the latest footage suggests that Hawkins’ newest supernatural problem may be growing right under everyone’s feet.
The Stranger Things franchise may have completed its main story, but Netflix clearly isn’t ready to leave Hawkins behind.
On Aug. 25, Netflix released the official Season 2 trailer for Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, the animated spinoff set within the original show’s universe. The new season premieres Sept. 17, continuing the story of Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas and Max as they face another supernatural crisis in Hawkins.
And this time, the danger appears to be coming from something that initially looks almost harmless.
Flowers.
Netflix’s official preview reveals that strange, colorful flowers are appearing throughout Hawkins, while ghostly apparitions and bizarre creatures begin disrupting the town. The Hawkins Investigators Club — the young heroes at the center of the animated series — are once again forced to figure out what is happening before the situation spirals out of control.
The setup sounds familiar.
But the new trailer suggests Season 2 could be taking the animated Stranger Things universe into some surprisingly strange territory.
Hawkins was supposed to be normal again
Season 1 of Tales From ’85 ended with the Hawkins Investigators Club defeating the Horde Queen and preventing another gate to the Upside Down from being opened.
For a moment, it looked as though the kids might finally get something resembling a normal life.
They were wrong.
According to Netflix’s official synopsis, Season 2 begins with the group returning to their usual activities, including arcade games and HIC missions, while also preparing for Valentine’s Day.
Then Hawkins begins behaving strangely again.
Flowers start appearing around town, and what initially looks like an unusual natural phenomenon quickly becomes connected to something far more sinister. Showrunner Eric Robles has teased that the flowers contain a supernatural secret — and that the decision by Nikki and Max to sell them around Hawkins only makes the problem considerably bigger.
That premise gives the new season a distinctly different flavor.
Rather than simply throwing another giant monster into Hawkins, the story appears to begin with something ordinary becoming increasingly disturbing.
And that has already caught the attention of fans.
The Season 2 trailer changes the mood
The newly released trailer leans heavily into a classic horror-adventure formula.
There are strange figures in the woods, paranormal activity, mysterious creatures and a growing sense that something is fundamentally wrong with Hawkins.
One recent trailer breakdown described the season as leaning into a “Scooby-Doo” style mystery, with the Hawkins kids investigating ghostly activity and bizarre creatures before discovering something much more dangerous beneath the surface.
That may sound lighter than the live-action series’ darkest material, but Tales From ’85 has always occupied a different space within the franchise.
The animated show is designed around the group’s younger years and has a Saturday-morning-cartoon influence, while still using the mythology and characters that made Stranger Things a global hit.
Netflix previously described the series as an adventure set in winter 1985, positioned between the events of the second and third seasons of the original show.
That timeline is important.
The characters are familiar.
The world is familiar.
But the stories can explore events that were never shown in the original series.
Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas and Max are back
The main Hawkins group returns for Season 2.
Brooklyn Davey Norstedt once again voices Eleven, with Luca Diaz as Mike, Benjamin Plessala as Will, Braxton Quinney as Dustin, Elisha “EJ” Williams as Lucas and Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max.
Odessa A’zion also returns as Nikki Baxter, a character introduced in the animated series.
The supporting cast includes Brett Gipson as Hopper, Janeane Garofalo as Anna Baxter, Jeremy Jordan as Steve Harrington, Alessandra Antonelli as Nancy Wheeler, Valeria Rodriguez as Rosario and Jack Griffo as Jeff.
For longtime fans, the appeal is obvious.
This is not a completely new group of characters wandering around an unrelated corner of the Stranger Things universe.
It is the familiar Hawkins gang, presented in an animated story that can expand the mythology without directly interfering with the conclusion of the live-action series.
The flowers could be the real threat
The most intriguing mystery in Season 2 may be the strange flowers appearing around Hawkins.
Netflix has deliberately kept the explanation vague.
Robles has revealed that the kids initially think they are returning to ordinary life, only to discover the flowers appearing throughout town.
And because Nikki and Max begin selling them, the mysterious phenomenon could potentially spread much farther than it otherwise would.
That raises an obvious question:
What exactly are the flowers?
The answer may be connected to one of the strangest elements teased following Season 1.
According to What’s on Netflix, the Season 1 finale featured a glowing blue stem emerging from the Horde Queen’s corpse in the Upside Down before opening into a Demogorgon-like mouth. The outlet reported that Robles described the image as the beginning of a new mystery and chapter for the animated series.
If that imagery is connected to the flowers appearing across Hawkins, the seemingly innocent plants could represent something much larger.
They may not simply be another monster.
They could be a mechanism for spreading Upside Down influence into the real world.
That remains speculation until the episodes arrive, but the trailer clearly wants viewers to wonder about exactly that possibility.
A new generation of monsters
Season 2 is also expected to expand the show’s collection of creatures.
Robles previously described the animated series’ monsters as essentially a combination of Hawkins Lab science and Upside Down matter. When these creatures die, they release glowing spores capable of infecting organic material, opening the door to increasingly bizarre monster designs.
That gives Tales From ’85 a significant advantage over a conventional spin-off.
The creators are not restricted to reproducing the Demogorgon or Vecna.
The animated format allows them to build creatures that would be considerably more difficult — and potentially much more expensive — to realize in live action.
The Season 2 trailer appears to take advantage of that freedom.
There are strange creatures, supernatural apparitions and unsettling imagery that would fit comfortably into the wider Stranger Things mythology while still giving the animated series its own identity.
The Upside Down remains the elephant in the room
Of course, there is one question hanging over all of this:
How does any of this fit into the larger Stranger Things timeline?
Tales From ’85 is set between Seasons 2 and 3 of the original show.
That means Eleven has already closed the gate at Hawkins Lab, creating an obvious storytelling problem for any series that wants to introduce new Upside Down-related threats.
Robles previously explained that this was one of the central challenges of developing the animated series. The creators had to find a way to introduce supernatural creatures without simply contradicting what viewers already knew about the live-action timeline.
The solution appears to be the creation of new threats that operate within the existing mythology rather than rewriting it.
That distinction could become increasingly important in Season 2.
The timing couldn’t be better for Netflix
The return of Tales From ’85 also arrives at an interesting moment for the franchise.
The original Stranger Things has now completed its five-season main story, with the fifth and final season having concluded in late 2025. Netflix’s flagship sci-fi series may be finished, but the company’s investment in Hawkins clearly isn’t.
Netflix renewed Tales From ’85 for a second season in April 2026, following the animated show’s debut. The streamer said at the time that new episodes would arrive later in the year.
The Season 2 premiere is now officially scheduled for Sept. 17, 2026.
That gives Netflix another opportunity to keep the Stranger Things brand active even after the central story has ended.
It also gives fans a chance to return to Hawkins without reopening the conclusion of the original series.
Fans now have two very different versions of Stranger Things
That’s perhaps the most interesting part of Tales From ’85.
The live-action Stranger Things story has become increasingly dark, serialized and apocalyptic.
Tales From ’85 offers something different.
It can revisit the younger versions of the characters, tell smaller supernatural mysteries and experiment with monsters that would be difficult to incorporate into the main continuity.
That does not necessarily mean the animated series is less important.
In fact, it may eventually become one of Netflix’s most useful ways to keep the franchise alive without endlessly extending the original characters’ adult stories.
The first season’s performance was not comparable to the enormous numbers of the flagship series, but Netflix nevertheless moved quickly to renew it. The streamer announced the Season 2 renewal only days after the show’s debut.
Now the pressure is on for Season 2.
September could reveal whether the experiment works
The second season arrives with a straightforward mystery:
Something is growing in Hawkins.
Something is haunting the woods.
And something may be trying to open another door to the Upside Down.
Whether the flowers become a major piece of Stranger Things mythology or simply serve as the opening mystery of another animated adventure remains to be seen.
But the new trailer has already accomplished one thing.
It has reminded fans that Hawkins is never really normal.
Not even when the gates are supposed to be closed.
