“It’s official: EMILY IN PARIS is coming back for season 5!” a joint post with Lily Collins and Netflix says.
Get ready to see more of Emily in Paris — and Emily in Rome!
On Monday, Sept. 16, Lily Collins, who plays the titular character, announced that Emily in Paris has been renewed for season 5 on Good Morning America. In an Instagram video, the actress can be seen sipping an espresso as she says, “There’s no place like Rome.”
“It’s official: EMILY IN PARIS is coming back for season 5!” reads the caption on the joint post with Collins and Netflix.
On Netflix’s Tudum, creator Darren Star opened up about the news, which comes less than a week after season 4 part 2 of Emily in Paris premiered.
“We’re thrilled with the incredible response to this season of Emily in Paris and excited to return for a fifth to continue Emily’s adventures in Rome and Paris!” he said. “Emily’s going to have a presence in Rome. It doesn’t mean she’s not going to be in Paris, but she’s going to have a presence in Rome.”
Starr explained that he wanted to take the cast to “unexpected places,” which is exactly how Emily ended up in Italy. Collins also spoke to Tudum about returning as the titular character, saying she is looking forward to digging deeper into her relationship with her latest love interest Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini).
“Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily because we ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work/life balance,” she said. “We want to have Emily be able to smile without condition. We want to see her beyond her vacay mode. And he comes at that perfect time.”
“I feel like they have a real spark and a real connection and a real romantic connection,” Star added. “A lot of that’s going to continue to play out next season.”
On Sept. 10, Collins told PEOPLE that if there were to be a season 5, she hopes Emily “puts her phone down more. She wears more flats. She gets to explore more of Italy. And maybe we meet her family.”
For Lucas Bravo, who plays Emily’s French love interest Gabriel, he wants them to end up back together. “I hope for my sake that they get together, because it’s way more fun to shoot lovely scenes and cheeky scenes and fun scenes than just being desperate and melancholic for five months,” Bravo told PEOPLE.
For Ashley Park, who plays Mindy, Emily’s best friend, she hopes the titular character finds happiness and ends up “with the person who makes her feel comfortable,” Park said.
“I think my biggest question for Emily right now is, ‘Where is she going to end up?’ Before it was America or France? Now it’s France or Italy. And so, I’m happy if at least her and Mindy stay friends.”
She joked that she just prefers not to film any more winter scenes. “We’re not doing Emily in the winter. No, I don’t want it. I’m saying it publicly to PEOPLE. PEOPLE, I don’t want it. I don’t want Emily in Alaska. I’d rather do Emily in space,” Park said with a laugh. “I want just Emily on the beach. Emily on vacation.”
At the premiere of the second part of season 4 on Sept. 10, Franceschini told PEOPLE that he was hopeful he would be returning to the hit series.
“The role for me is a great joy and awareness for the future [that] I can do it,” he said. “So I hope my work is up to the series’ [standards] and this is the most important thing.”
He revealed that when he got the part, he had been wrapped up in other projects. It took him until after filming to finally soak in the success of the show, he shared.
“For me it’s an unexpected gift, because everything happened very quickly,” Franceschini gushed. ”When I was selected, I was filming a TV series here in Italy, so I didn’t have time to realize what was happening.”
Also at the premiere event, Star caught up with PEOPLE and said he was already brainstorming the characters’ next moves.
“There are so many ways it can go but sure, there are some ideas,” he revealed. “It’s really a fun story to keep telling.”
The series quickly reached #1 on Netflix when it initially released season 4 in August. In the first four days, it had nearly 20 million views, and it has remained in the top 10 for four consecutive weeks in 93 countries, according to Tudum.
Parts 1 and 2 of Emily in Paris season 4 are now streaming on Netflix.
