Mike Tyson and Jake Paul faced off on Nov. 15 in the biggest streamed sporting event in history. The records broken by Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions are likely to lead to even more sports coverage in the near future.
One of the biggest storylines of the fight itself was the age difference between Tyson and Paul. Tyson stepped back in the ring at 58 years old, while Paul is over 30 years younger, at 27 years old.
Many believed that Tyson should not get back into the ring at his age, and there were concerns his age could lead to his getting hurt to some degree. That was especially true considering he had a health scare on a flight that delayed the fight from July to Nov.
Mike Tyson: “Listen, you know what I remember?”
Rich Davis: “No.”
Mike: “Coming back from the first round and then the next thing I remember Jake is doing some kind of, I don’t know; what was he doing…?”
Rich: “Oh yeah, the little bow at the end. He bowed.”
Mike: “That’s the last thing I remember.”
Apparently, Tyson only remembers fighting following the first round and came back to when Paul was bowing in the waning seconds of the eighth and final round. That could be a big reason as to why Tyson looked stoic in the ring.
Though he did throw punches early and often, he began to fade following the first round. He simply could not catch Paul, which isn’t that surprising given Tyson’s age. However, blacking out for an entire eight-round fight is concerning.
Tyson’s son, Amir, revealed recently that he believes his father is done fighting. When speaking to secondsout.com, Amir stated:
“I think he’s done. My step-mom, she’s saying he’s done and they’re a team. That’s husband and wife stuff.”
Considering Tyson mentioned retiring in his Instagram post following the fight, his son saying the legend is done, and the recent admission that he blacked out — it would be safe to assume that Tyson is ready to step away from boxing for good.
