Bill Gates is considered the second richest person in the world and the value of the wealth of the businessman, investor, author and philanthropist is estimated at 96 billion dollars.
Even, in a calculation made, it is said that if Gates would give every single person in the world 10 dollars, he would have 20 billion dollars left for himself.
Gates became the world’s youngest billionaire in history at the age of 31. He held this title until 2008, when 23-year-old Mark Zuckerberg usurped it.
According to foreign media, Telegraph reports, Gates spends his fortune on everything from luxury cars to taking care of his favorite tree, but his main goal is to help the world.
Bill Gates got an early start on building his fortune. At just 17 years old, he sold his first computer program – a timetable program – to his private school for $4.200.
Childhood friends Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft in 1975. In 1980, Microsoft developed an operating system for the first IBM personal computer.
The system, MS-DOS, quickly became one of Microsoft’s most profitable products as it was developed into what would become the operating system for nearly every computer.
When Microsoft went public, the company was valued at $61 million and Gates made $1.6 million from the stock sale. The remaining 45% stake in the company was valued at $350 million.
At just 30 years old, Gates was already one of the richest people in America.
In 1990, Microsoft released another hugely successful product, Microsoft Office, which continues to be one of Microsoft’s biggest products today, 30 years after its first release.
And when Windows 95 launched in 1995, Gates became the world’s richest man, remaining there until Warren Buffett took his place in 2008, who was ousted by Jeff Bezos in 2017.
In 1999, at the height of the “dot com” boom, Bill Gates’ fortune briefly exceeded 100 billion dollars.
But things didn’t always go in Gates’ favor. In 2000, he resigned as CEO while Microsoft was embroiled in an anti-trust lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice.
After a ruling that the company had violated anti-trust law, Microsoft’s stock price fell 14%. It took about 15 years for Microsoft to come back. But since then, the company has made strong progress.
Thus, in 2018, Microsoft hit its first year of sales of 100 billion dollars and ended the year as the most valuable company surpassing companies like Apple and Amazon.
Bill Gates has already sold or donated most of his Microsoft shares. He has given away more than $35.8 billion of his stock, so far. He currently owns just over 1% of Microsoft’s stock, but that 1% is estimated to be worth around $7.3 billion. So even though Bill Gates may no longer be the richest man in the world, he’s still doing pretty well.
The charitable foundation that Gates and his wife, Melinda, founded, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is the largest private philanthropic center in the world. It holds more than $50 billion in assets and has donated $40 billion to various global education and health initiatives over the years.
In 2010, Bill and Melinda Gates teamed up with Warren Buffett to create The Giving Pledge. Those who join commit to donating half of their wealth to charity.
Although Gates is committed to philanthropy, he is not shy about spending his money on things he likes, such as luxury vehicles, the Telegraph reports.
For his first car, Gates bought a Porsche 911.
This was his first such expenditure of Microsoft money and not a surprising choice given Gates’ love of speed through the deserts of New Mexico, where Microsoft was based at the time.
Gates has nevertheless collected a number of luxury cars over the years, including a Ferrari 348 and a Jaguar XJ6.
His love for luxury vehicles extends beyond cars. In 1997, he bought a $21 million airplane.
Recently, Gates booked a yacht for $5 million a week for a family vacation in the Mediterranean.
Even more impressive, however, is Gates’ real estate portfolio. Through his personal investment firm, Cascade, Gates owns nearly half of the FourSeasons hotel chain.
He also has part ownership of the Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In addition, in 2009, Gates bought a $9 million ranch in Wyoming that once belonged to Buffalo Bill. And in 2013, he bought a 4.5-acre ranch in South Florida for $8.7 million. Three years later, he made headlines for buying three of the neighboring properties for a profit of $18 million. Gates also spent $18 million on Jenny Craig’s Southern California horse farm.

Gates has brilliantly devoted seven years and $63 million to building a massive high-tech estate in Medina, Washington, which is also home to Jeff Bezos. He named his fortune, Xanadu 2.0 – which today is estimated to be worth around $131 million.
The house is said to be extremely high-tech, equipped with a sensor system that adapts to each guest’s temperature and lighting preferences via a point each guest receives.
And thanks to the speakers hidden behind the wallpaper, music accompanies you in any room you enter.
In the rich library, you can find a Leonardo da Vinci manuscript that Gates paid $30 million for in 1994. And of course, Gates’ beloved car collection is kept inside a custom garage that can “house” up to in 23 cars.
However, not all of Gates’ treasures are stored inside this estate.
A separate building of 3900 square meters contains a giant swimming pool, which contains an underwater music system.
Meanwhile, Gates’ favorite tree – a 40-year-old maple – is under 24/7 surveillance and automatically watered – when needed. For his lakeshore, Gates imports “special sand” every year.
However, the media write, Telegraph reports, not all of Gates’ purchases are equally extravagant. He wears a wristwatch that costs only $10 because he doesn’t believe in spending a lot of money on what he wears and is said to have a taste for McDonald’s and Diet Coke.
Gates has revealed that he usually drinks three to four cans of the drink a day. Gates’ effort also extends to his children. Each of his three children will receive $10 million, meaning they each receive less than 1.1% of their father’s total wealth. Gates has said he wants his children to succeed in their own right.
In the end, most of Bill Gates’ massive fortune will go to charity. When asked about his goals, Gates explained that he is focused on working with his foundation to reduce child mortality and malnutrition, as well as ending polio.
He also cited global warming as one of his main concerns – not forgetting the balance between privacy and innovation, as well as the use of technology in education.
And as it says at the end, Bill Gates eventually intends to offer a large part of his wealth to fight for the things he believes in and leave behind a better world for future generations.
