In the nicest way possible, there was definitely something a little off with Mysaria in season one of House of the Dragon, namely her accent. It seemed to be a bit all over the place and sounded almost fake. Fast forward to season two of House of the Dragon and Mysaria has a much more standard ambiguous European accent.
Well, it turns out we now finally know the real reason why her accent sounded so bizarre, as actress Sonoya Mizuno shed some light on what on earth happened. In a very bizarre reveal it turns out Sonoya recorded her lines in her current accent for season one, but this was then replaced with ADR, or automated dialogue replacement. This meant her voice was changed, and by the sounds of it not necessarily by her being the one to re-record her own lines.
In an interview with TheWrap, she spoke about how hard she found the backlash and she didn’t think re-recording her lines was the “best decision.” She explained: “That was quite unpleasant, to be honest. My accent was entirely ADR in the first season because they had decided late in the process to change my accent, which was not, I don’t think, the best decision that was made.”
After the amount of criticism she received for her accent in season one, the House of the Dragon team decided to change to the “original plan.” This plan was to do “an ambiguous European, French accent”, which is the one featured in season two. However, the actress is still aware of the conversation around her accent, admitting: “I’m still aware that a lot of people like to say what they like to say on the internet, and I’m going to choose to ignore it.”
