Over the years, several massively successful films have stopped just short of the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office. Most recently, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer concluded its run with around $975 million worldwide. The biographical thriller will no doubt be re-released on IMAX multiple times in the future, and it’ll probably pass the $1 billion mark eventually. But A Minecraft Movie isn’t the kind of film that would typically warrant a re-release. It’ll need one, however, if it ever wants to pass the $1 billion mark. As things stand, the movie will likely fall painfully short of the milestone, especially now that it has been released on home video.
With $416 million domestically and another $512 million from overseas markets, A Minecraft Movie has generated a cumulative global haul of $928 million so far. It has firmly established itself among the 100 highest-grossing hits of all time, and most recently, overtook fellow W.B. release The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers at the global box office. The acclaimed fantasy film holds a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score, but A Minecraft Movie has been relying almost entirely on fan support. It holds an excellent 86% audience score on the aggregator, which has essentially rendered its 48% critics’ score moot. The film delivered the biggest debut of the year when it grossed $163 million in its first three days of release over a month ago. This was $1 million higher than Barbie’s debut haul in 2023.
That movie emerged as a cultural touchstone, grossing over $600 million domestically and more than $1.4 billion worldwide. A Minecraft Movie won’t hit those numbers, but there’s no denying the impact it had in theaters. Even director Jared Hess was pleasantly surprised to see what a grand old time audiences were having together, cheering at references to the source video game and applauding every appearance of stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ Sequel Is Imminent
Produced on a reported budget of $150 million, A Minecraft Movie is (and will remain) the second-biggest video game adaptation of all time, behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Incidentally, that film also featured Black. But it grossed significantly more than A Minecraft Movie during its theatrical run. Super Mario Bros. cracked the $1 billion mark and generated over $1.3 billion worldwide. A sequel is in the works, of course. Don’t be surprised if W.B. announces a follow-up to A Minecraft Movie as well.
