One character not yet confirmed for season 2 is fan-favorite Usami Fuji, and actor Hoshi can give no clarity on whether she’ll be back, though she will definitely be watching as Shōgun continues into the future, as she exclusively told Screen Rant. Check out her remarks below::
I have no idea what the plan is, but in Justin [Marks] and Rachel [Kondo] I trust, and I believe they will come up with another exciting season. Honestly, it’s less about myself and Fuji. Just as another fellow fan of Shōgun, I’m looking forward to what comes out for season 2 and season 3.
Fuji’s Arc Felt Complete After Shōgun Season 1, But She Could Still Return

Fuji experienced one of the more harrowing story arcs of all Shōgun characters, an arc that began with her losing her husband and baby child, but saw her persevering through the remainder of the season’s sometimes violent events and being rewarded with her freedom. Toranaga releasing Fuji from further duties, allowing her to live out the rest of her life in peace as a nun, was indeed one of the more appropriate and satisfying endings for any Shōgun season 1 character.
It could be that co-creators Marks and Kondo will allow Fuji to stay off-screen in future Shōgun seasons, no longer embroiling her in the show’s sure-to-be-intense drama. They already gave the character a good conclusion, and there is no compelling reason to revisit her, if indeed she means to stay out of the action and seek a peaceful life free from further tragedy.
If anything might compel Marks and Kondo to revisit Fuji, despite the satisfying ending they gave her in Shōgun season 1, it’s the thought of bringing Hoshi herself back into the fold. Hoshi’s subtle and knowing performance indeed elevated Fuji to fan-favorite status, and it would be sad not to see her back. Fuji’s interactions with John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) were especially memorable, and though Fuji is no longer required to be his consort after her grant of freedom from Toranaga, the thought of seeing that unique pair back together might be too tempting for Kondo and Marks to pass up.
