This is the Zodiac Speaking is an upcoming true-crime documentary series on Netflix. The three-part series tells the story of the Zodiac Killer, an unknown serial murderer who killed five people in Northern California in the late 60s. All three episodes will drop on Netflix on October 23, 2024, and its bound to be another huge hit for the streamer.

The Netflix documentary series promises a brand-new insight into the unsolved cold case murders of the Zodiac Killer, and it’ll feature new interviews and new clues that point towards a potential culprit. Many theories have been put out there over the years, but a man called Arthur Leigh Allen was the only person to ever be named as a suspect in the case, and it appears that this will be the angle explored by the team behind this new series.

This Is The Zodiac Speaking sees the directors, Ari Mark and Phil Lott speaking to a Californian family who once had Arthur Leigh Allen as a teacher. They also talk to family friends of the suspect as they trawl through archival and physical evidence the family has in their possession, and they begin to piece together the connection between Allen and the Zodiac murders.

Apparently, the family started to figure it all out while watching David Fincher’s 2007 true crime masterpiece, Zodiac. Fincher filmed at the real sites of the murders, and the family realized that Allen could be the Zodiac killer, because he took them to all the places. In an interview with Variety, one of the co-directors, Ari Mark, said:

They started uncovering all these letters that he’d been writing back and forth with their mother that are the most incriminating letters in the world.

Mark and Lott also explained why they wanted to get involved in the Zodiac case:

There’s only a handful of real murder case IP that are not only quintessentially American, but really define an era. The Zodiac case also defines the true crime genre in a lot of ways.

The Real Story Behind The Zodiac Murders

 

The Zodiac Killer was active in Northern California between December 1968 and October 1969. He officially attacked seven people, and killed five. It’s easily the most well known unsolved murder case in American history, and it’s had law enforcement baffled for over 60 years. The killer sent a series of threatening messages to newspapers, claiming he would commit more murders if his messages weren’t printed. These letters consisted of a series of cryptograms for people to try and solve the mystery.

The Victims Of The Zodiac Killer

David Arthur Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen were two teenagers who were shot and killed on December 20, 1968, on Lake Herman Road.
Michael Renault Mageau and Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin were shot multiple times on July 4, 1969, in Blue Rock Springs Park in Vallejo, California. Mageau survived.
Bryan Calvin Hartnell and Cecelia Ann Shepard were stabbed on the 27th of September 1969, at Lake Berryessa in Napa County, California. Hartnell survived.
Paul Stine was a taxi driver who was shot and killed on October 11, 1969, in Presidio Heights, San Francisco.

This shocking true story had many potential suspects put forward by law enforcement experts, online sleuths and the media, but nobody was ever caught. A team of detectives known as the Case Breakers, led by journalist Thomas Colbert have claimed there is evidence linking former US Airman Gary Francis Poste to the crimes. The group insists Poste’s ‘partial DNA’ had been secured at the federal lab in Quantico, Virginia, but there is no proof of this. Arthur Leigh Allen remains the most logical perpetrator, and This Is The Zodiac Speaking could be set to put forward a strong case that backs up this theory.
