Bridgerton's Penelope Featherington looking away on a Lady Whistledown Society Papers backgroundBridgerton season 3 finally reveals Lady Whistledown’s identity to the ton, but what happens to her in the books is entirely different. The ending of Bridgerton season 3, part 2 illustrates Penelope realizing that she cannot have a happy life with Colin without making amends for her actions as Lady Whistledown. She gives Queen Charlotte total control over exposing Lady Whistledown, which is why the queen allows Penelope to continue writing a gossip column for now. Lady Whistledown’s reveal on the show could not have happened without Queen Charlotte, given her pivotal role in attempting to unmask her.

However, Romancing Mister Bridgerton sets up a different scenario. Throughout her career, no one knows Penelope is Lady Whistledown, allowing her to write freely and keep her secret for over a decade. So, when Colin Bridgerton learns Penelope is Lady Whistledown in their book, it is under entirely different circumstances, with very different stakes. Until Colin and Penelope decide to come forward with Lady Whistledown’s identity, Colin is the only one who knows the truth, except for Cressida’s discovery the week before the reveal.

How Penelope Is Discovered To Be Whistledown In The Books

The Role Colin Bridgerton Plays Is Much Bigger

There are two stages for Penelope’s reveal as Lady Whistledown in Romancing Mister Bridgerton. First, Colin Bridgerton—along with the readers—discovers her identity. He visits Penelope only to find her secretly leaving her home in a suspicious carriage. Colin follows Penelope into a dangerous part of London until he catches her leaving an envelope with her next Lady Whistledown column reader for her publisher. However, the ton learns about Lady Whistledown’s identity at the very end of the novel, an event triggered by Cressida’s blackmail.

The Lady Whistledown reveal is the perfect conclusion to the first half of the Bridgerton books.

Instead of giving in to Cressida, Colin and Penelope reveal the truth to the ton after Anthony promises to protect Penelope. At this point, Colin and Penelope have resolved their conflicts, so Colin radiates with pride as he presents Penelope as Lady Whistledown to the ton. The Lady Whistledown reveal is the perfect conclusion to the first half of the Bridgerton books, with the ton‘s cheers validating Penelope’s personality and giving her the confidence to be herself:

And then it came. Clap. Clap. Clap. Slow and methodical, but with such force and determination that everyone had to turn and look to see who had dared to break the shocked silence.

It was Lady Danbury.

She had shoved her cane into someone else’s arms and was holding her arms high, clapping loud and proud, beaming with pride and delight.

And then someone else began to clap. Penelope jerked her head to the side to see who…

Anthony Bridgerton.

And then Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings.

And then the Bridgerton women, and then the Featherington women, and then another and another and more and more until the entire room was cheering.

Penelope couldn’t believe it.

Tomorrow they might remember to be angry with her, to feel irritated at having been fooled for so many years, but tonight…

Tonight all they could do was admire and cheer.

For a woman who had had to carry out all of her accomplishments in secret, it was everything she’d ever dreamed of.

When she finally gives up Lady Whistledown, she does it for herself—Penelope is now confident enough to live boldly without hiding behind a pen name. So, she becomes a fiction writer and begins to craft novels.

Bridgerton season 3 creates a critical difference in Penelope’s narrative: the Lady Whistledown reveal occurs much earlier than it does in the book. In Romancing Mister Bridgerton, Penelope is 28 years old. However, she is 19 in the show, almost a decade younger than her book counterpart. Her purpose for Lady Whistledown also differs between the show and the book. In Romancing Mister Bridgerton, Penelope strictly uses Lady Whistledown to self-express without damaging people. Penelope has similar intentions in the show, but when she clashes with people like Marina or Eloise, she exposes them for petty reasons.

Romancing Mister Bridgerton takes place in the spring of 1824.

In the show, one of the people she hurts is Queen Charlotte, so it makes sense the queen plays a critical role in the Lady Whistledown reveal. Charlotte is not even a factor in the Bridgerton books and does have a hand in unmasking Lady Whistledown. So, the outcome of Lady Whistledown’s reveal in Bridgerton season 3, episode 8, “Into The Light,” has to be different, since the queen is a major player.

Going forward, Penelope must prove that she can write a gossip column that adheres to the queen’s preferences. It is a different ending, but more fitting, since Penelope has made many more mistakes in the show than in the books. Penelope’s arc has a much more satisfying conclusion in Romancing Mister Bridgerton, but given her age, her show counterpart still has much more room to grow as a writer and person. It sets up an exciting Bridgerton season 4 where viewers and the ton can see how Lady Whistledown approaches her column now that she is writing as Penelope Bridgerton.
