Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine was filled with an embarrassment of riches for Marvel fans who had been dreaming of seeing the titular characters together for a long time. Additionally, the film had some pleasant surprises with certain Marvel characters coming back as a way to celebrate the Fox-era Marvel films and giving them a fitting closure.
Superman star Henry Cavill made a surprising appearance in an MCU film playing a Wolverine variant named The Cavillrine. He is seen working on his motorcycle while smoking a cigar as Deadpool encounters him during his search for the right Wolverine. Despite his scene-stealing appearance, the shoot proved to be hazardous for the actor’s health.
While being known for being a fitness freak, director Shawn Levy told The New York Times that the actor kept the cigar lit in his mouth for the entirety of the shoot which lasted for 8 hours. Cavill was sick to the stomach the next day due to this but he never regretted what he did to portray the role. Levy said,
He kept that cigar lit and in his mouth for the entirety of the shoot day. I remember hearing the next day that Henry was sick to his stomach because he had been inhaling cigar smoke for eight hours straight, but never once did he waver.
This interesting anecdote reveals Cavill’s dedication even for a brief cameo in the star-studded MCU feature. The director also told Variety that the Man of Steel actor instantly said yes to the role as he was game for its subversive and playful nature. Cavillrine indeed became one of the wild highlights from the film.
Ryan Reynolds Found It Frustratingly Hard to Find The Perfect Actor To Play A Wolverine Variant
Finding someone who could level with Hugh Jackman for Deadpool & Wolverine was a hard task | Marvel Studios
Deadpool & Wolverine featured a wild montage of Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool travelling through various universes encountering several versions of Wolverine. While many of them are played by Hugh Jackman, one of them is fantastically played by Henry Cavill. In an interview with Collider, Reynolds revealed that finding the right actor for one of the variants was incredibly hard.
I can’t think of a more impossible and frustrating role to recast than Wolverine. I don’t know. As an actor, it would be awful and intimidating, and you’d need to take it in a different way. But if you had to do it, and replace the guy who’s made it canon in every way, shape, and form on-screen and off wasn’t available, Henry Cavill would be pretty good!
Reynolds’ intuition paid off greatly as fans loved Cavill’s badass portrayal of the character. Deadpool & Wolverine has been performing extremely well and is on its way to becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
The film is currently running successfully in theatres around the world.
