Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol episode 5.After Genet’s shocking death in episode 4, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon continued killing off its major antagonists as Daryl murdered one of his greatest foes, but something about the villain’s demise felt off. Although Genet’s Walking Dead death was slightly disappointing considering how much potential she had as a villain, her departure did help elevate Daryl’s remaining enemies. As a result, the protagonist’s inevitable clash with Losang felt bigger than ever, and the fight didn’t disappoint. The showdown may have come sooner than expected, but seeing these two experienced fighters battling to the death made for some great entertainment.
With L’Union betraying Daryl Dixon earlier in season 2, the rivalry between Losang and Daryl became rather personal, and while neither’s primary goal was to kill the other, their tension reached a climax in episode 5. Losang’s desperation to find Laurent and keep L’Union’s vision alive meant he was more than willing to go through Daryl to capture the boy. Likewise, Daryl’s main objective was to bring Laurent safely to the Commonwealth, meaning these two characters had no choice but to fight. While their confrontation nailed things from a combat perspective, one major detail was missing that felt slightly odd.
Daryl Dixon Never Found Out That Losang Killed Isabelle
Losang’s Death Means Daryl May Never Know The Truth About What Happened To Isabelle
Despite how great the action between Daryl and Losang was during their epic fight in episode 5, Daryl never found out that Losang was responsible for Isabelle’s death. Although he decided not to tell Isabelle that he loved her, it’s clear the protagonist had strong feelings for his love interest before she died, and Isabelle felt the same way. The two shared some passionate moments, making Isabelle’s Walking Dead death hurt that little bit more; however, even though Daryl was with her during her final moments, he never asked what happened to Isabelle, leaving her cause of death a mystery.
Carol was aware she’d been stabbed, and assuming she told Daryl this information, he may have just assumed it was Losang. Still, her death isn’t mentioned when the two face off, and although Daryl brutally kills the villain, it doesn’t seem like there was any pent-up rage being taken out on him. There was some personal animosity between them given how season 2’s story played out, but the closing moments of the fight didn’t feel like Daryl getting revenge on the man who killed someone close to him, it just felt like the protagonist taking care of business.
Therefore, unless these details are brought up in season 2’s finale, it feels like Daryl will never find out who killed Isabelle. Even if episode 6 does shed some light on this, it almost feels irrelevant now that the antagonist is dead, creating a slightly odd vibe to their showdown. The fight was still great, but it could have had more emotion behind it if Daryl was carrying the anger about Isabelle’s death, suggesting there was some slight wasted potential when it came to this highly anticipated battle.
Losang’s Death Would’ve Been So Much Better If Daryl Knew How Isabelle Died
The Fight Didn’t Feel As Personal As It Could Have Been
Having Daryl head into the fight knowing that Losang killed Isabelle would have given the fight some extra edge. The small tweak would not only have made Daryl’s brutal kill more meaningful, but it could’ve allowed for some compelling dialogue during the fight. Killing Isabelle seemingly put Losang on a darker path and having him potentially taunt and ridicule Daryl after Isabelle was brought up would have shown how much his mission changed him. Additionally, it could’ve led to Daryl making more mistakes, drawing the fight out longer while making his eventual victory feel even more triumphant.
Alternatively, Losang could have shown remorse for his actions, which would have made Daryl savagely beating the villain to death seem even more ruthless.
Alternatively, Losang could have shown remorse for his actions, which would have made Daryl savagely beating the villain to death seem even more ruthless. Daryl and Losang’s Walking Dead fight had a lot of strengths, but it lacked the emotional weight that had been set up throughout the season, and having Losang use Isabelle’s death one way or the other could’ve made their scrap even more iconic. It felt like a strange decision not to use Losang’s most sinister moment as ammunition behind this encounter, but it didn’t stop the fight itself from living up to the hype.
The Final Battle Against Losang Is Still One Of Daryl’s Best Moments In The Walking Dead
Daryl’s Brutal Victory Over Losang Proved How Violent He Can Get
Daryl has had plenty of memorable moments throughout his Walking Dead tenure, but his fight with Losang is right up there. One-on-one combat only happens on special occasions in the zombie franchise, but when it does, it tends to deliver. Daryl vs. Beta contained some gripping drama that showed how strong of a fighter Daryl is, and his conflict with Losang was a reminder of this. Seeing the protagonist strategically utilize his weapons against a worthy opponent alongside thinking fast to avoid disaster is exactly why fans have grown to love Daryl so much.
New episodes of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol air Sundays on AMC and AMC+.
The unforgiving nature of his kill also shows how far the protagonist is willing to go when pushed. Even the build-up to the fight with Daryl picking off Losang’s men in the darkness made him feel like a Batman-level threat, especially as he emerged from the shadows and came face-to-face with the antagonist. It may not have eclipsed some of Daryl’s best Walking Dead scenes, like saving Alexandria or defying Negan, but his fight with Losang is an unforgettable encounter, making Daryl Dixon episode 5’s showdown one of the character’s best moments in the entire franchise.
