The upcoming Aegon the Conqueror series was born out of a rather ridiculous pitch for the character.
Game of Thrones has found a new lease of life with the ongoing prequel series House of the Dragon. The franchise saw a dip in quality and received extreme backlash for its lackluster handling of the final season of the mothership show. The prequel series brought back the glory days of the franchise with fans being reminded of what made Game of Thrones great.
Fans are loving the latest season of House of the Dragon | HBO
HBO is keen on expanding the universe even more as they have various Game of Thrones spin-offs in the pipeline. While they have begun shooting The Hedge Knight series, they have yet to start production on the announced Aegon the Conqueror series. Discussions about the project had begun after the end of Game of Thrones and its original treatment was pretty weird, to say the least.
Original Idea For The Aegon The Conqueror Show Had A Pathetic Approach To the Famed Targaryen
The upcoming Aegon show must try to avoid the mistakes of the final season of Game of Thrones | HBO
Game of Thrones is now basking on the success of House of the Dragon and is looking at various prequel possibilities with new characters. HBO has confirmed development on a Hedge Knight series and a show focused on Aegon the Conqueror. The latter is a promising project as its events have been hinted at many times in House of the Dragon and is a big part of George R.R. Martin‘s Fire & Blood.
It seems that HBO had been taking up interesting prequel ideas since the end of Game of Thrones, giving birth to the said show about Aegon’s conquest of Westeros. The original pitch for the show was penned by Rand Ravich and Far Shariat. The approach they took with Aegon was an unexpected yet weird one.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, their treatment for the show had Aegon the Conqueror (who is inspired by William the Conqueror) as a drunken lout. This sounds like a rather wacky and pathetic idea that can go south very quickly similar to how they handled various storylines in season 8 of the mothership show.
The final season of Game of Thrones suffered significantly due to some rash and convoluted decision making including Jon Snow’s illogical arc along with Daenerys‘ sudden switch to being a total villain and burning down King’s landing. Thus, HBO may refrain from approaching the new show with concepts that feel too absurd. The Aegon show has recently hired Mattson Tomlin as the writer and it is unknown whether they are still sticking to that original pitch.
Ryan Condal Does Not Want House of The Dragon To Become Repetitive and Stale
Ryan Condal hopes that House of The Dragon continues to push boundaries with each season | HBO
House of the Dragon is going strong with its second season and the show has already been renewed for a third season. Showrunner Ryan Condal recently spoke to GamesRadar about the challenges to making the show appealing to fans and his intention to not repeat past mistakes (like the season finale of Game of Thrones).
Condal stated that he intends to start the show strong and keep the momentum throughout with interesting arcs and characters with every season. He wants each season to be a completely different experience so that they don’t end up repeating themselves and avoid losing the integrity of what they created earlier. The showrunner said,
And we’re trying to find satisfying arcs within the season structure. So, hopefully, you start with a bang, and then you build to another bang through the series, but you’re really trying to arc out the characters so that each season is a different experience for all of them.
And then you leave them off all in a place where you can pick up with them next year, and then take them in a new direction because you don‘t want to end up in that place where you’re doing the same thing again and again.
Condal seems to have big plans for season 3 and he cares about the audience’s expectations for the franchise. It remains to be seen how season 2 fares and whether it increases the hype for season 3. The first 3 episodes of season 2 of House of the Dragon are streaming on Max.
