The name change that shook the Palace
The Princess of Wales and Prince William’s wife, Kate Middleton.
King Charles III had an interesting and bold suggestion for Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales. He wanted her to change the spelling of her name to “Katherine” from “Catherine” to avoid any clash with the royal protocols. Before marrying Prince William, Kate had already changed her name to Catherine, which is how she is now referred to by the British Royal Family. However, the King’s suggestion was to change it to “Katherine” to align with the royal standards.
In Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, it was revealed that the King and Queen Camilla had strict suggestions for the Princess of Wales to alter the spelling of her name. The memoir shed light on the family dynamics of the British Royal Family and shared how the King had asked Kate to change the initial of her name from “C” to “K.”

Prince Harry noted the reason behind this suggestion, stating, “There were already two royal cyphers with a C and a crown above: Charles and Camilla. It would be too confusing to have another. They suggested making it Katherine with a K.“
However, despite the suggestion, Kate did not change her initials from Catherine to Katherine. This decision did not affect her relationship with her royal in-laws as they continue to share a warm relationship. As reported by Ok!, Prince Harry shared a moment when he turned to Prince William after the request was made and gave him a look that said ‘You listening to this?’ to which William’s reaction was blank.
King Charles asks Kate to rebrand
It’s interesting to note that according to Vanity Fair, Professor Anrianna Chernock shared insight into why Catherine went by the nickname Kate during her college days. This sheds light on Kate’s personal choice and how she has navigated her identity over the years.
The request from King Charles III to change Kate’s name showcases the intricacies and traditions within the British Royal Family. Despite the suggestion not being followed, it’s evident that Kate’s relationship with the royal family remains strong and unaffected. The memoir and insights into Kate’s personal choices provide a glimpse into the dynamics of the royal family and how its members navigate their roles within it.
The suggestion for Kate to change her name highlights the careful consideration given to every aspect of royal life. It also reflects how individuals within the royal family make personal choices that may not always align with traditional expectations. Kate’s decision not to change her name showcases her autonomy and individuality within the royal family, while also maintaining a positive relationship with her in-laws.
