Poor Billy…
While The Boys ’ fans are now hurrying to see the finale of Season 4, it’s still unclear how the show’s leads can end up. Even after seeing the latest episode we won’t be able to see it all, as the fifth and the final season is only in development.
Apart from the sigma villain Homelander, it is Billy Butcher whose fate is the most anticipated aspect of the show now. If you’ve already seen the recent episodes, you know that the team’s leader’s state is deteriorating more and more, but he’s still alive.
Warning: Spoilers for The Boys comics ahead!
Butcher’s Ending In the Comics Is a Tragic, Yet Great Plot Twist
It comes as no surprise for comics readers that Karl Urban ’s leading character not only dies in the original books, but rather becomes the biggest evil of the whole series.
Suffering from the worm in his head, the comics’ Butcher kills Black Noir, but still has his hatred towards Supes growing rapidly, that’s why he creates a strain of Compound V that can kill them all.
The remaining members of The Boys try to persuade him not to cause an outrageous catastrophe due to the contagious virus he made. However, Butcher has some other plans, and they involve killing his own team too.
The leader gets rid of Frenchie, The Female and Mother’s Milk, and it is only Hughie who remains alive and receives a chance to stop Butcher. They start a massive battle at the top of the Empire State Building, but the very finale of it is shocking.
Butcher sees that Hughie isn’t ready to kill him and decides to perform his final trick: he tells his teammate that he killed his parents. In a fit of rage Hughie finally stabs Butcher, only to realize then he lied to him about the parents.
Therefore, Butcher himself wanted Hughie to kill him and to stop his maniacal plan related to eliminating all the Supes in the world, and this killing is definitely the most unpredictable one in the comics.
How Can Butcher End up in the Show?
It’s quite unlikely that Amazon’s series will go down this same path, as it’s notorious for its major alterations from the original, including the fact that the show’s The Boys remain human.
“I think personally that he’ll [Butcher] continue to grow and become a better person, getting over his Supe prejudice and possibly making a heroic sacrifice at the end of the show,” predicts Redditor @Kryptid_Euclid66 with a decent degree of optimism.
Only time will tell how the onscreen Butcher’s story will conclude, so let’s wait for other episodes, while The Boys Season 4 is now available for streaming on Prime.
