From his Academy Award-nominated performances in a handful of critically acclaimed films to his well-known passion for marijuana, Woody Harrelson has earned quite a sprawling reputation across his decades-long career in Hollywood. In 2014, he starred opposite Matthew McConaughey in Season 1 of the police procedural True Detective, a performance widely regarded as the actor’s career-best. But in a recent conversation on the Why Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, Ted Danson and Simu Liu discussed their personal experience regarding Woody Harrelson and his gross on-set behavior involving flatulence, which has been known to completely shut down a production or two.

Vegan Farts On The Set Of Cheers

Back in June 2024, Cheers co-stars Woody Harrelson and Ted Danson reunited with each other and launched Why Everybody Knows Your Name, their very own podcast that gives the old pals a chance to catch up with some of Hollywood’s funniest and most interesting stars.

sOn October 9, the two actors brought Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu onto the show to discuss his thoughts on how being a Marvel superhero has changed his life and what it was like appearing in Barbie, the highest-grossing movie of 2023. But perhaps more importantly, Liu was asked to weigh in on what Danson considers to be Harrelson’s most disgusting room-clearing habit; letting out toxic “vegan farts” while on the set of Cheers.

Last Breath

The conversation began innocently enough, with Danson asking Liu about the working conditions on his upcoming movie Last Breath, which just so happens to also star Harrelson. The film is based on the true story of a deep-sea diver who is forced to battle the elements in an attempt to rescue his crewmate who is trapped below the ocean’s surface. As you can imagine, the film deals with a story that largely takes place underwater, leading to many scenes being filmed on a set resembling the close quarters of a submersible.

Working In Close Chambers

Curious about the exact details of the set, Danson couldn’t help but dig a little deeper. “Did you shoot in that chamber where you have to be onboard the ship, what is it called?” Danson asked. After Liu quickly identified what Danson was referring to as the “sat chamber,” Danson continued to fish for a juicer answer.

“Right, did you work together in that, ’cause what I’m bringing up is…” Danson questioned before being cut off by Woody Harrelson, who clarified that the two of them didn’t have to breathe in helium and oxygen.

Shut Down Cheers

Following the brief correction, Danson revealed that he did actually have a point to his question, recalling that when he and Harrelson worked together on the set of Cheers, “his vegetarian farts were so horrible that he would shut down production. I’m just wondering what happened with you,” Danson pondered.

Woody Harrelson quickly chimed in with yet another correction, stating that his gas wasn’t “vegetarian farts” but “vegan farts.” The 63-year-old actor then attempted to explain his cause of his nausea-inducing flatulence, pointing to the fact that he failed to properly chew his food back then.

After a hearty laugh, Liu finally got the chance to answer the question about Woody Harrelson, remaining as diplomatic as possible in the process. “They were vegan farts to be fair,” said Liu. “You were really nice. I think you were really nice about it,” he said about Harrelson during the pair’s time spent on the set of Last Breath.
