A classic Johnny Depp crime movie has had a resurgence entering Netflix’s Top 10 chart in the US.

The gripping biopic remains a top choice with film fans despite having already been out for almost 10 years. The movie tells the true story of Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp) and his Winter Hill Gang who hailed from Boston and were notorious during the 1970s.

The film was released to critical acclaim in November 2015 as it highlighted the crimes committed by the group in their heyday. It landed on Netflix in early September opening up the take to a fresh audience.Netflix has now confirmed that Black Mass entered their Top 10 chart in the US for September 9 through September 15, 2024. It hit Number 8 on the chart with Lee Daniels’ supernatural horror movie The Deliverance at Number 7, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie at Number 9.

The movie tells the story of the Winter Hill gang’s complex ties to the FBI through Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton), who attempts to use Bulger as an informant, which sees him use the position to cover up his crimes.

The film sees not only gripping performances from main stars Depp and Edgerton but has an array of huge name stars supporting them with characters like Billy Bulger (Benedict Cumberbatch), Lindsey Cyr (Dakota Johnson), and John Morris (David Harbour).

The popular movie is filled with suspense and shocking moments where deep details of a dark criminal organization, whose crimes remained relatively unknown even years after disbanding, are exposed. Black Mass successfully tells the story of Bulger’s criminal activities with all the thrills of a cinematic reenactment of a dark chapter of Massachusetts history.
