Haason Reddick is in the same situation with the Jets as he was once with his former team the Philadelphia Eagles. Contract disputes led him to seek a trade and he found a home in the New York Jets. To his surprise, the LB discovered he wasn’t getting a contract from Gang Green either. Now, he has once again requested for a trade, this time from Aaron Rodgers’ Jets.
The funniest thing of all is that the 29-year-old pass-rusher has been to the Jets’ facility only once. On April Fool’s Day, he showed up for his physical and press conference. The Jets were under the impression that Reddick would play under his current contract, but that turned out to be untrue when he didn’t show up for offseason or mandatory training camp.
“133 days between April Fool’s Day and today, the most delayed April Fool’s joke in the history of April Fool’s Day. Congratulations Haason Reddick on that one. I couldn’t help but, when this was happening today and this news was coming out about a trade request and we kind of sensed it was going to get to this point because of all the holdouts and hold-ins that we have, this one felt like the one that had the most potential to drag into the regular season,” said Mike Garofolo.
The NFL Insider gave a blunt analysis regarding Haason Reddick’s situation. NFL town has been full of hold-ins and holdouts this offseason and some big names were added to the list including CeeDee Lamb, Brandon Aiyuk, Jordan Love, Ja’Marr Chase, and others. While the strategy has worked for players like Love who received a whopping $220 million extension, others are still stuck in the waiting hoop like Reddick.
According to the analyst, out of all the players, Reddick’s non-participation appeared to be one with the “most potential to drag into a regular season” and has now turned into a ‘serious’ trade situation. The reason? “Haason Reddick was serious about his money and his respect. He did not feel like he was getting either from the Jets.”
Garofolo clarified in the comment section that he brought up April Fool’s Day because he did the conference on April 1. The Jets sent out a conditional third-round pick for the 2026 draft for the linebacker. Apart from missing the off-season and mandatory training camp, Reddick also failed to attend the training camp for the past 15 days, racking up $850k in fines and another $300k in discretionary fines, per ESPN.
“Whatever happens, I’m going to be happy,” said the LB in the introductory presser. “I’m going to give my all, no matter what. That’s just who I am as a person.” One thing that has been unsettling about the whole situation is that the Jets spoke to Reddick before he joined the team, so they knew that he wanted to be the highest-paid pass rusher in the league just like his counterpart, Danielle Hunter, yet no action seems to be taking place from their side.
How trading for Haason Reddick has affected the New York Jets
Starting off, Adam Schefter recently pointed out, “Edge-rusher Haason Reddick now has officially requested a trade from the Jets, per sources. Jets sent a conditional 2026 third-round pick to the Eagles in exchange for Reddick, who showed up for his physical and press conference and spoke highly about the organization and opportunity. But then there was no new deal, and now there is a trade request.”
Schefter pointed out that the Jets offered him nothing and even placed him on the Reserve/DNR list. This increased the Jets’ cap space to $20 million, per Over The Cap. However, if he reports to the training camp, the cap space will go down by $15 million, still leaving the New York team with $5 million in cap space.
Currently, Reddick is listed to play for $14.25 million in base salary (non-guaranteed) but wants that amount to go up to $25 million, making him one of the highest pass rushers in the league. However, the Rodgers-led team reported back in August that they have no intention of giving into Reddick’s demands. As we know it, this is Reddick’s second trade request in the last six months.
“We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report,” General Manager Joe Douglas said in the statement. “Since the trade discussions back in March we have been clear, direct, and consistent with our position. Our focus will remain on the guys we have here as we prepare for the regular season.”
Talk about a strong full stop to any negotiations. Anyway, as the Jets enter the regular season on September 9 against the SB runner-up San Francisco 49ers, fans will want to see if Reddick will take on the field and how the Jets will deal with this situation.
