Luke Bryan was one of the many country music luminaries at Wednesday night’s CMA Awards, where he revealed the recent advice he offered to Carrie Underwood.
The 41-year-old singer – who won Season 4 of American Idol back in 2005 – was announced as the replacement for Katy Perry back in October.
While Underwood is no stranger to Idol from the performing side, Bryan, 48, offered some wise words for when she joins the judges table, via E!.
‘The thing about it is Carrie has to kind of learn in real time. You kind of have to learn how to be a judge,’ Bryan said on the red carpet at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.
He also joked, ‘It’s not like you can go to American Idol judging school. She went to American Idol Be A Contestant School.’
Filming has already gotten under way for the new season, which will debut in 2025 though no date has been set at this time.
Bryan added that Underwood has been, ‘awesome with the kids. She has the best soul and heart. She’s doing a great job and really settling into the judging table.’
She joins Bryan and Lionel Richie along with host Ryan Seacrest for the new season, with Bryan revealing she’s been having trouble saying no.
‘When she has to say “No” she’s like, “I dont wanna tell them no.” But it’s kind of a part [of the job],’ Bryan added.
‘It’s hard when you got a kid that’s young and they haven’t found who they are musically,’ Bryan insisted.
Underwood herself revealed to Extra last month when her judging role was announced that part of the job was quite difficult.
‘Whenever anyone is saying “I can sing another one. I have this song and this song,” it’s worse because it’s still a no,’ she said.
Underwood added, ‘Everybody is so nice, it’s very pleasant working conditions here. It’s part of me, it’s part of my history.’
‘Hopefully, I can bring that into my advice for the people that are singing in front of us,’ she said.
In August, Carrie shared her theories about how she will fare as a judge, during a conversation at Resorts World in Las Vegas with SiriusXM.
She pointed out that she has worked in several genres and so ‘I like to think that I am versatile, and hopefully when I listen to people come in and audition, I can have any lens I need to put on as far as what kind of music I’m thinking.’
The Before He Cheats songstress added: ‘I think I can be honest and constructive but still kind, and I think that’s the whole point.
Carrie noted that ‘people are coming in and, you know, it’s dreams, and you’re part of somebody’s story from that moment on.’
