Lady Gaga Promised to Offer Her Authentic Take on Harley Quinn

Following the commercial success of Joaquin Phoenix‘s Joker, came the intriguing announcement of releasing a sequel Joker: Folie á Deux by DC Studios on October 4, 2024. With Todd Phillips back in the director’s chair, alongside Phoenix’s return as DC’s Joker, this time Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn made the sequel even more promising than the first one.

Although we all know that Oscar and Grammy winner Lady Gaga was born to be a star, now the actress/singer is transforming into an iconic DC comic book character Harley Quinn. You know my version of Harley is mine and it’s very authentic to this movie and these characters. I’ve never done anything like I’ve done in this movie before, so it’s all going to be completely brand new and really fun.

Ever since Lady Gaga has been associated with the Joker sequel, fans have been constantly comparing her to Margot Robbie’s version in Suicide Squad and other DC flicks. However, it seems the actress/singer is set to make Robbie proud by adding her authentic take on the role. Implying that her character will be nothing like Robbie’s previous version, Lady Gaga clarified to fans about what to expect.

Margot Robbie is Confident About Lady Gaga’s Role as Harley Quinn

Meanwhile, Margot Robbie was previously praised for bringing the notorious DC character Harley Quinn to life first time in Suicide Squad, followed by the spinoff Birds of Prey and the quasi-reboot The Suicide Squad. Robbie briefly narrated Harley’s origin story of being the psychiatrist treating the Joker in Arkham Asylum in a deleted montage scene from Suicide Squad starring Jared Leto.

Considering her experience in playing the DC character, fans had expected that Joker: Folie á Deux would bring back Margot Robbie in the role of Harley Quinn. However, the opportunity later went to Lady Gaga, and despite losing the role, Robbie expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the actress/singer. Speaking with Variety while on the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards, Robbie openly praised Lady Gaga.

Oh my god, she’s going to crush it. Are you kidding? She’s going to be amazing! I can’t wait to see it… I actually haven’t spoken to her about it. I almost don’t want to know, so I can save it for the surprise when I get to see the movie.

After Margot Robbie previously expressed her confidence in Lady Gaga, it seems the Oscar and Grammy winner is now preparing to make the actress proud. As Lady Gaga revealed that she will offer an authentic take on the character, implying that she won’t be tampering with Robbie’s version, the singer not only shut down comparisons but also set the record straight for fans.
