Kelly Clarkson Says Encouraging Taylor Swift To Re-Record Her Masters Was Actually Reba McEntire’s Idea!

Kelly Clarkson is opening up about giving advice to her fellow songstress Taylor Swift!

The Stronger singer chatted with Jimmy Fallon on Sunday night’s episode of The Tonight Show to talk about the business side of the music industry and how she feels about Tay re-recording her first six albums.

After the initial news broke that Scooter Braun had acquired Swift’s masters in a purchase from Scott Borchetta of Big Machine Records, Clarkson tweeted at Miz Swift in mid-July with her suggestion:

“@taylorswift13 just a thought, U should go in & re-record all the songs that U don’t own the masters on exactly how U did them but put brand new art & some kind of incentive so fans will no longer buy the old versions. I’d buy all of the new versions just to prove a point ??‍♀️”

Like Clarkson, fans also sprung into action with the suggestion, urging the You Need To Calm Down artist to take re-recording into consideration via an online petition.

The 37-year-old explained to Fallon the idea actually came from her stepmother-in-law, Reba McEntire:

“We saw each other actually after I did that. I wasn’t really trying to defend or offend anyone. It was more like, Reba told me she did that. That was it. That was all…  She wanted to own her masters. And I was like, ‘Well if it’s that important to you, like find a way.’ And she recut all of her music and did it with the same musicians, the same everything. That’s where I got the idea.”

She continued (below), adding the business side of her career is almost secondary to her music:

“Taylor is [an] artist, like she’s been writing since she was a little girl. So it’s kind of like her diary, so I get why she’d wanna [own her music].”

But as for her own masters, the three-time Grammy Award winner doesn’t really care if she owns them either way:

“I don’t really care about owning my masters or not. I’m just like, ‘Whatever, I’m going to sing them until I’m dead, it’s fine.’ Somebody can make money off of it, I don’t care. But hers is [different]. Like, I own half or a little more than half my stuff. And hers is 100 percent of it. So I can see how it would matter to her.”

The late night TV host expressed his admiration for the momma-of-two sticking up in defense of her fellow artists, and it seems from her response Clarkson, who has been subject to bullying in the past, believes in good karma:

“I stick up for everybody! Hopefully they’ll be there for me when it need it.”
