Iconic actor Keanu Reeves, best known for his legendary roles as Neo in The Matrix film series and as John Wick in the titular franchise, is set to film a new original movie in Paris, France titled The Entertainment System is Down.

According to Production Bulletin, Reeves will soon be joined in Paris, France by Spider-Man trilogy actress Kirsten Dunst and Captain America: Civil War actor Daniel Brühl in a film written and directed by critically acclaimed Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund. The Entertainment System Is Down is reportedly set to begin filming in January 2025, with U.S. distribution handled by A24, known for its slate of recent Academy Award-winning films.

What is The Entertainment System is Down About?

The film’s story explores themes of social satire, set aboard a long-haul flight where passengers are informed shortly after takeoff that the entertainment system is down. Trapped on a 15- to 17-hour journey without digital distractions, the passengers are forced to confront the modern-day horror of boredom, unraveling under the pressure of prolonged disconnection from technology.

The entire film is being shot on a real 747 airplane, which was purchased by the producers for The Entertainment System is Down. The film’s director, Östlund, was quoted by Variety as saying, ”We wanted to have a real airplane because very often, when you watch an airplane movie, characters are put in a corner, pretending to be on a big flight, but we don’t really see it. It’s fu..ing frustrating!”. Östlund also added, ”Then we will use the whole airplane, not just a section, so that we can walk from the cockpit all the way to the back, with a long tracking shot, we will get the feeling of being in this space.”.

Most recently, Reeves filmed John Wick: Chapter 4 at numerous iconic landmarks across Paris. One memorable scene featured an elaborate action sequence at the famed street of Rue Foyatier in Montmartre, where Wick fought off countless henchmen while climbing and tumbling down over 200 steps. Other notable locations included the Arc de Triomphe, Place Charles de Gaulle, The Louvre and the Trocadéro Square, with the Eiffel Tower in the background.

The Entertainment System is Down will be a Swedish-German-French co-production with Norwegian co-producer Eye Eye Pictures. It will also reunite the director with longtime collaborators Erik Hemmendorff of Plattform Produktion and Philippe Bober of the Paris-based Co-production Office. No release date has yet been for the film, but fans can expect more updates soon as the film begins production.

Meanwhile, Reeves’ voice can be heard in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which hits theaters on Dec. 20.
