ans were super excited when Keanu Reeves signed on to voice Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The actor recently opened up about the role and its unexpected intensity.
“For 50 years, Shadow has been in a state of suspended animation,” Reeves said in a feature shared exclusively by Screen Rant. “He’s coming out of it seeking revenge. It was really the internal journey to get to the anger and the emotion. It was intense.” The actor went on to share his feelings about working on the iconic franchise saying, “Sonic 3 and playing Shadow… it’s really on another level,” he added.

The behind-the-scenes clip also featured Dr. Robotnik voice actor Jim Carrey, who talked about his reaction to Reeves’ casting. “When I heard that Keanu Reeves wanted to play Shadow I went, ‘Oh alright,’” he said, before explaining how Reeves is the perfect person for the role. “Shadow has that sympathetic, brooding kind of darkness that Keanu has mastered so brilliantly,” he continued.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 follows “Sonic, Tails and Knuckles as they face off against a powerful and mysterious new adversary, Shadow the Hedgehog. The trio forms an unlikely alliance with the evil Dr. Robotnik in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet,” the official synopsis reads. The movie is directed by Jeff Fowler from a script by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington.

Along with Reeves, the voice cast also includes Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaugnessey as Tails, and Idris Elba as Knuckles. The movie, based on the popular Sega video games of the same name, also features a live action cast showcasing the talents of James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally, Lee Majdoub, Alyla Browne, and Krysten Ritter.

Fowler previously praised Reeves for his dedication to the role. “He was so fantastic to work with,” he said. “He thinks the character is awesome, and he definitely understood what we were going for, and he was very excited to do his version of it. Like all the cast, [he] really wants to get it right and really cares. He would give us so many different versions of line readings and just want to keep going.”
A new trailer for the film features new footage of Keanu Reeves’ Shadow the Hedgehog along with Carrey in his dual roles as the Robotniks. Paramount Pictures also revealed plans for an opening day movie event set for Thursday, Dec. 19. Fans lucky enough to get tickets via the official movie website will get to attend the first screening of Sonic 3 at 3 PM local time at participating locations.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 races into theaters across the world on Dec. 20, with the early screening event on Dec. 19.
