What would it take for director Jan de Bont to make Speed 3? Perhaps a walker for senior citizens.
The filmmaker reunited with his stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock on Tuesday night in Hollywood for a special 30th anniversary film screening and Q&A as part of Beyond Fest, where they were asked about the possibility of a third film in an era of reboots and sequels.
“The geriatric version. It won’t be fast,” Bullock quipped.
Added Reeves, “Retirement.”
“I think it would be a different movie,” said de Bont, though it “would be great” to work with Reeves and Bullock again.

Bullock conceded that a third film would “require a lot from everybody” and questioned whether the powers that be in Hollywood would even be equipped for it. “All these things happened because the crazy man in the greenish jacket over there,” said Bullock. “He’s so soft and gentle today and I’m like, that’s not the man I remember. But he’s the man who put the energy and the idea together and knew what the audience wanted and demanded it from everyone and everyone stepped up to plate.”
“So what would that movie be that would make Jan’s brain and brilliance happy? It would require a lot from everybody,” she added. “I don’t know if we’re in an industry anymore that’s willing to tolerate it and be brave enough to do it. Maybe I could be wrong.” But if de Bont can’t create what’s in his brain for the audience, “I don’t know what we could do that would be good enough for the audience.”
The 1994 blockbuster hit centered on Los Angeles police officer Jack Traven (Reeves) as he tries to prevent a city bus full of passengers, including Bullock’s feisty Annie, from blowing up after it’s rigged with a bomb by vengeful extortionist Howard Payne (the late Dennis Hopper). It culminated in the panned 1997 sequel Speed 2: Cruise Control, which Reeves notably did not return for and centered on Annie’s fight for survival amid a cruise ship.
Even Bullock herself has panned the sequel. “I’m still embarrassed that I was in” Speed 2, Bullock told TooFab in 2022. “That’s one that I wished I hadn’t done, and no fans came around that I know of.”
The geriatric sequel awaits.
