NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Hunt will be added to Kansas City’s practice squad.
The report came after Pacheco suffered a fractured fibula against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
The two-time Super Bowl champion went down late in the Chiefs’ 26-25 win.
Kansas City placed Pacheco on injured reserve on Monday.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that he will miss six to eight weeks.
Hunt entered the NFL with the Chiefs in 2017.
He had a stellar rookie season, rushing for 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns while earning a Pro Bowl selection.
Hunt played one more season with Kansas City before playing with the Cleveland Browns for five seasons.
He was the backup to Nick Chubb for four seasons.
Hunt posted 2,285 yards and 25 touchdowns with Cleveland.
The 29-year-old recorded 147 receptions for 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns.
Last season, Hunt ran for 411 yards and a career-high nine rushing touchdowns.
However, he ran for a career-low three yards per carry.
Hunt has been a free agent after his one-year deal with the Browns expired after the 2023 campaign.

He will be entering a tailback room with rookie Carson Steele and Samaje Perine as both will surely be relied upon during Pacheco’s absence.
The Chiefs will continue to be without Hollywood Brown, who reportedly could miss the rest of the regular season due to a shoulder injury that requires surgery.
Patrick Mahomes will still be able to utilize Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice, and Xavier Woody when the team faces the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football.
Kansas City is 2-0 after wins against the Baltimore Ravens and Bengals.
The Falcons are coming off a stunning 22-21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football.
