Johnny Depp was originally slated to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6, bidding a fond farewell to his beloved character.
However, Disney decided to drop the Hollywood star, expressing hesitation at any suggestions of his return following allegations of domestic abuse by his ex-wife in 2018, which he vehemently denies.
After winning his libel case against Amber Heard in 2022, the 61 year old actor has been gradually returning to the film industry with European films such as Jeanne du Barry and Modì: Three Days on the Wing of Madness.
This week, Lionsgate announced a Hollywood comeback for Depp, revealing that he will co-star alongside Penélope Cruz in Day Drinker.
The actor’s recent remarks about his experiences have given fans hope that a return of Jack Sparrow in a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie could be possible. During his 2022 libel case, Depp made it clear that he would not work with Disney again on a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, even if offered hundreds of millions of dollars.
However, time can heal, and it seems that’s exactly what the actor has been doing. He confesses he doesn’t hold grudges, thus sparking hope he could return as Jack Sparrow.

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter while promoting Modì, Depp expressed: “Honestly, I can sit here this very second and think about all the hit pieces, and how everybody was against me, and yeah yeah yeah he is off the map … endless stuff. I can remember it all. Went through it all. Some of it was not the most beautiful time, some of it was hilarious. Some of it was mad.”
He went on: “The thing is, it simply just was, and it simply just is. So, for me, it happened. I learned, man. Everything that we experience, whether you’re given a snow cone or walking your dog, you learn something somewhere along the way. So I don’t have any ill feelings toward anyone. I don’t have this great reserve of hatred, because hatred requires caring. Why carry that baggage?”
