Johnny Depp has landed his first major role in years following the fallout from his split and subsequent legal proceedings with actress Amber Heard. Depp has not starred in a major Hollywood production since 2018’s Harry Potter franchise prequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
According to reports, Johnny Depp is set to star in the Lionsgate thriller Day Drinker. Not only that, by the film will also co-star Academy Award-winning actress Penelope Cruz, marking the fourth collaboration between the pair.
Depp and Cruz previously starred together in the films Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express.
The Hollywood Reporter states that Day Drinker follows “a cruise ship bartender who meets a mysterious day drinker—only for both of them to find themselves entangled in a criminal underbelly, and connected in unexpected ways.”
“The actor in recent years starred in the French period drama Jeanne du Barry last year and directed the period indie Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness that just played at the Rome Film Festival, but those were not commercial plays and were made with European backers.”
Day Drinker is set to be directed by filmmaker Marc Webb, known for his work on movies such as (500) Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, Gifted, and Disney’s upcoming live-action Snow White film.
