After a lot of rumors and speculations, it was finally confirmed earlier this year that Keanu Reeves is all set to bring Shadow to life in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The actor has been one of the most anticipated additions to the upcoming film. In fact, Reeves himself has been a big fan of the action-adventure comedy franchise. But fans feel that besides Reeves’ popularity and talent, it was also their personal manifestation that had something to do with him landing the role of the spikey anthropomorphic character.

Keanu Reeves shares his excitement for Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Keanu Reeves recently stopped for a quick chat with Entertainment Tonight at the LA premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The interviewer informed Reeves that fans believe they have “manifested” the actor into the film. The journalist also pointed out the unintentional easter egg in the first Sonic film, where the blue hedgehog was watching the 1994 action flick starring Reeves, Speed. Considering the coincidences, Reeves immediately stated, “It was meant to be”.
Reeves also shared how excited he is for fans to see him as a hedgehog in the upcoming film. “Hopefully, people like my Shadow,” said the 60-year-old. However, along with the excitement for Reeves’ casting, there was also some underlying skepticism. Many found the idea of Shadow sounding like The Matrix actor a bit unsettling. However, these concerns were soon put to rest by the live-action director Jeff Fowler.

Keanu Reeves definitely understood the assignment
During an appearance on Sonic Revolution’s live-stream event, Jeff Fowler praised Keanu Reeves for his take on Shadow. “I think he definitely understood what we were going for,” stated the director. Not just that, apparently, Reeves, who was recently outearned by an MCU veteran, did his own homework about the villainous character and “implemented that into his voice-acting”.

Reeves himself shared at the movie’s London premiere that “there’s an intensity to doing voice work and specificity”. He compared the experience to “doing radio” and called it “fun”. While the actor’s comments can come across as a bit laid back, it is clear from the director’s statement that Reeves did not take the role of Shadows as an easy voice-acting gig.
