Is Keiran Atreides A Spy? What The Dune: Prophecy Character Is Really Up To?

Even though Dune: Prophecy is set 10,000 years before the life of Paul Atreides, one of his ancestors still plays a prominent role in the story. In Dune: Prophecy, Chris Mason plays Keiran Atreides, Swordmaster for House Corrino. In addition to Mason, the cast of Dune: Prophecy includes Emily Watson, Travis Fimmel, Mark Strong, Jodhi May, and Sarah-Sofi Boussnina. The first two episodes of Dune: Prophecy explores Keiran Atreides’ relationship with several characters, specifically members of House Corrino, played by Strong, May, and Boussnina.

The story of Dune: Prophecy follows Valya Harkonnen, who leads the Bene Gesserit, as she plans to take control of the Imperium. To do this, she recruits Princess Ynez Corrino, heir to the Imperium, to her sisterhood. However, Keiran Atreides’ role within House Corrino, specifically his relationship with Ynez, could disrupt Valya’s plans. Furthermore, Dune: Prophecy episode 2 also reveals that Keiran is a spy for the rebellion. Therefore, Keiran Atreides is one of the most interesting characters in Dune: Prophecy.

Keiran Atreides Is Part Of The Rebellion In Dune: Prophecy

While Keiran Atreides was largely a supporting character in the first episode of the show, Dune: Prophecy episode 2 revealed that he is actually a member of the rebellion. Therefore, Keiran is working as a spy within House Corrino’s palace. In Dune: Prophecythe rebels are working against House Corrino and other Great Houses because the wealth from spice flow is only benefiting them. Episode 2 of Dune: Prophecy also reveals that it was the rebels who were behind the attack on Arrakis, which resulted in Desmond Hart being swallowed by a sandworm.

A lot of the rebellion’s actions are being orchestrated by the Bene Gesserit.

However, Keiran’s loyalty to the rebellion is questioned by another member of the rebellion, Division bartender Sister Mikaela, who saw him with Princess Ynez. There are several layers to Dune: Prophecy’s story, and it is also revealed that Sister Mikaela is working with Valya Harkonnen. Therefore, a lot of the rebellion’s actions are being orchestrated by the Bene Gesserit. Most members of the rebellion probably don’t know about this, and if they ever found out, it would likely change how much they believe in the rebellion’s cause.

Why Keiran Atreides Was Scanning House Corrino’s Palace

While Keiran Atreides’ loyalty to the rebellion was being questioned in Dune: Prophecy episode 2, he did steal blueprints of House Corrino’s palace and delivered them to the rebels. It is not revealed exactly why the rebellion wants blueprints for the palace, but they are working against House Corrino, so it is possible they are planning an attack. Emperor and Empress Corrino have already been shown to be vulnerable in Dune: Prophecy, so an attack could significantly weaken them. Perhaps the aftermath of the attack would see Keiran’s family, the Atreides’, become more powerful.

While the rebellion’s plan in Dune: Prophecy has not fully been revealed yet, it will definitely not be good for House Corrino. The rebels have already been sabotaging House Corrino on Arrakis, and could impact their role within the Imperium even more. However, as the plot of Dune: Prophecy unfolds, it is important to remember that Valya Harkonnen has connections within the rebellion. Therefore, the rebellion could just be serving the will of the Bene Gesserit.

Does Keiran Atreides Actually Love Princess Ynez?

Any attacks against House Corrino may take a toll on Keiran Atriedes, however. While he disagrees with how Emperor Corrino is ruling the Imperium, Keiran has formed a connection with the Emperor’s daughter, Ynez. A lot of Keiran’s motivations in Dune: Prophecy are still unclear, so it is unknown how much he actually cares about Ynez. It is possible he is just using her and his full loyalty remains with the rebellion, but there are also hints that he has genuine feelings for her.

In the first episode of Dune: Prophecy, Princess Ynez was preparing to leave the planet Salusa Secundas to train with the Bene Gesserit. However, the assassination of Pruwet Richese delayed her departure, which made her more reserved around Keiran in episode 2 of the series. Their interactions in episode 2 of Dune: Prophecy suggest that Keiran actually does have real feelings for Princess Ynez, which could make it difficult for him when the rebellion decides to attack her family. Future episodes of Dune: Prophecy will likely reveal where Keiran Atreides’ true loyalty lies.
