Over the years, Johnny Depp has become well-acquainted with controversy. While the most televised and talked about has been the affair with Amber Heard, there have been several other hiccups in his career that have added to his “bad-boy’ reputation. One of the more recent ones was a comment that the actor made towards the former president, Donald Trump.

The comment ended up putting the actor under a lot of heat. However, recently he talked about this, revealing that he regrets what he said.

Johnny Depp and His Untasteful Comment

In 2017, Johnny Depp gave an interview where he ended up making quite a controversial comment about the then-president, Donald Trump. The actor was in attendance at the Glastonbury Festival where he was promoting a recent project, when he ended up making quite a surprising remark.

In a clip (via CBS), the actor seemed intoxicated when he began to talk about the businessman. Specifically, he made a joke about assassinating him, mentioning that an actor has not assassinated a president in a very long time. While he tried to clarify that he simply lied for a living, he added that maybe it was time that something like that happened. Naturally, this was not well-received.

When was the last time an actor assassinated a president? I want to clarify. I’m not an actor. I lie for a living. However, it’s been a while. And maybe it’s time.

Considering the attempts that Trump has actually faced since then, it is safe to say that on top of being untasteful at the time, the quip has now aged about as good as milk.

Johnny Depp Regretted His Words

Sometime after this comment created wildfire in Johnny Depp’s professional life, the actor gave an interview with Rolling Stone where he apologized for what he said. He started by mentioning that he was trying to make a nod to something Donald Trump said in 2016. At a campaign stop, he made a speech (via NPR), where he ended up saying something extremely controversial.

I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn’t lose any voters, OK?

With the elections still going on at the time, Trump made a comment that he could go to Fifth Avenue, a place famous to house celebrities, and shoot someone there. He added that he would not lose any voters because of it. While this statement wasn’t tasteful in the slightest, Depp managed to find himself in deeper trouble when he was referencing it.

I was trying to connect it to Trump saying he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue, but it didn’t come out right,

The actor mentioned that he was trying to make a nod to this controversy. However, it ended up translating very poorly. It is safe to say that the entire situation was quite peculiar.
