'The Acolyte' Season 2 Is the Perfect Way to Make Darth Plagueis' Story Canon

Disney’s most recent Star Wars project, The Acolyte recently ended, and despite all the controversies and review-bombing, the series was one of the most talked about shows online, and even now, after the first season is over, the fans are actively discussing the series and many theories related to its characters, which proves its enduring popularity, regardless of whether you like it or hate it.

And while the series definitely had its ups and downs, even the haters cannot deny that the series had some really great moments and that it helped expand the current Star Wars canon in a proper way. One example of this is the live-action debut of Darth Plagueis, who had been mentioned by Palpatine in Episode III, which has a lot of potential.

Our friends on ScreenRant have put together a brilliant piece that explains how Plagueis can be used in the future and how The Acolyte Season 2 (if it happens), will be a brilliant platform to make Plagueis’ famous (currently) non-canon storyline canon once again.

He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was…losing his power, which eventually of course he did.” These are the words that Chancellor Palpatine used to describe Darth Plagueis in Episode III, when he first mentioned the character to Anakin. And while it was Palpatine who ultimately killed Plagueis, his former master, his description was not an incorrect one. This is why we must ask you: “Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?

Darth Plagueis the Wise is an iconic Star Wars character and, before Palpatine, the most powerful Sith Lord in history. The original movie canon only mentioned him, but James Luceno’s epic novel Darth Plagueis (2012) reveals more of his story and establishes his background, which many Star Wars fans still consider canon. The novel’s storyline can be summarized like this:

Plagueis has just murdered his master in cold blood and has become the dominant Sith so he begins to look for an apprentice of his own to advance his goals of becoming an immortal Sith Lord. Soon enough, he encounters his Master’s secret apprentice who he swiftly defeats and uses to locate someone powerful in the Force but each person he finds is not good enough for his plans. One day, Plagueis finds himself on Naboo and takes an interest in a young Palpatine who he eventually finds out controls the powers of the dark side on such a level that he was able to hide his abilities until Plagueis was able to draw them out.

Soon after, Plagueis takes his new apprentice now named Sidious to the planet of Mygeeto to begin his training and once he is ready teaches him how to become even more powerful than he currently is. Plagueis helps Sidious rise to the rank of senator of Naboo while Sidious trains a secret apprentice behind Plagueis’ back and begins to create the perfect Sith as a young boy from Tatooine is brought before the Jedi Council to be trained in their ways. However, Plagueis has his own plans for the boy.

As you can see, this is an essential book for understanding this character, and it beautifully expands on the hints given to us by Palpatine. Sadly, after Disney’s takeover, this book stopped being canon, but that is where The Acolyte comes in.

Namely, if the series does get a second season, it will most certainly feature more of Darth Plagueis in that aspect, and that gives the writers a great opportunity to once again make Luceno’s novel canon. Of course, they don’t have to make a page-by-page adaptation, but the key elements such as Plagueis’ “Grand Design” and his activities both before and during the beginning of the Skywalker saga could and should be kept.

The fans would love this, absolutely, and it would show them that Lucasfilm actually cared for them and the former Legends canon. The series has already made a step towards that by confirming Plagueis is a Muun, a fact that had been established in the Legends universe, so we hope that the writers will hear the fans out and provide them with what they actually want.

Of course, all of this depends on what is going to happen with The Acolyte, so it’s still some time before we actually find out everything, but be sure to stick with us in the meantime for all the news and updates.
