Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol episode 1.

With The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon confirmed for a third season, the spinoff will be moving its filming location, and the franchise has finally revealed why Daryl and Carol go to Spain. The French setting has become an iconic part of the show, and with season 2 continuing to explore fresh environments, it’ll be hard to leave it behind. The unique backdrops, interesting characters, and cinematography have all helped Daryl Dixon become arguably the best Walking Dead spinoff, and it wouldn’t have been possible without France’s gorgeous scenery, proving how important the country has been to the show.

However, in order for Daryl’s story to progress, leaving France behind feels inevitable. His journey can’t end in Europe as most of his loved ones are waiting in the US, meaning the protagonist will have to exit the continent for his arc to feel complete. While this explains why the next installment won’t take place in France, it doesn’t clarify Daryl Dixon season 3’s Spanish filming location. Moving from one European country to another feels a little confusing given Daryl made plenty of allies in France, but the franchise has offered some clarity on why the protagonists go to Spain.

Daryl Confirms He Intends To Return To Alexandria (Despite Daryl Dixon Season 1’s Ending)

The Protagonist Confessed He Still Plans On Heading Back To The US

Despite the positive relationships Daryl has built with Isabelle and Laurent, the protagonist still plans on heading back to America. Although traveling to France happened completely by accident, Daryl made genuine connections and seemed to be relatively content in the country, leading to a real dilemma during Daryl Dixon season 1’s ending. The finale indicated that he was unsure whether to stay with his new allies or return to Alexandria and the Commonwealth to reunite with his loved ones. While it looked as though this would be an ongoing struggle for Daryl throughout season 2, the premiere suggested differently.

Rather than continuing to be conflicted about his future, the protagonist revealed he intended to return to the United States in Daryl Dixon season 2’s opening episode, ending any uncertainty about his plans. Given how much he struggled with this decision previously, it was a surprise to see him so adamant about leaving, especially as the move to Spain leaves little room for any twists. Still, his goal seems to once again be finding a way back to America, and The Walking Dead has officially confirmed that Spain will be a part of Daryl and Carol’s route home.

Spain Is Part Of Their Route Home To America

Whether it’s a planned detour or not, Daryl and Carol’s arrival in Spain seems to be part of their road home to the US. Both characters have desires to return to the Commonwealth and Alexandria – especially now that Rick is back – but a direct route from France may not be possible. Daryl Dixon season 3’s big update involves a synopsis for the next season being unveiled, which confirms the duo will be looking for a way back to America while encountering new obstacles in Spain. Therefore, it’s clear Daryl will stand by his decision to leave France.

Given season 2 will likely focus on Daryl and Carol’s reunion and begin setting up their journey back to the US, it feels like Spain may be an unnecessary step given episode 1 introduced Ash and his plane. However, Carol’s lies could potentially damage this relationship or Ash may die in Daryl Dixon season 2, meaning the characters will need to find a new way home. They do still have their connection with the Nest, who has promised Daryl a mode of transport when the time is right, but the move to Spain is also bad news for this community.

The Nest Seems Unlikely To Survive If The Spinoff Is Moving Locations

Although the Nest seems to be France’s safe haven away from Genet and Pouvoir, the community looks like it will have a hard time surviving season 2. Alongside Genet’s determination to capture Laurent and take over France, the Nest seems like it may be led by a potential villain, which could lead to internal conflict. The spinoff did a great job of establishing supporting characters who are allies or part of the Nest, but many of them could be killed off before Daryl and Carol move to Spain, meaning there’s a strong chance the community won’t survive.

Norman Reedus teased season 2’s finale being the best hour of Walking Dead TV yet, meaning there could be some major drama, high stakes, and big losses.

Daryl seems unlikely to leave Laurent and Isabelle behind without some reluctance, but if they were killed during the Nest’s destruction, it would give him no real reason to stay once the battle is over. Norman Reedus teased season 2’s finale being the best hour of Walking Dead TV yet, meaning there could be some major drama, high stakes, and big losses. Even if Laurent and Isabelle survive the conflict, they may want to rebuild the Nest and what it symbolizes when it’s inevitably destroyed, meaning the community is in real danger during Daryl Dixon season 2.
