Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol episode 1.
With The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon‘s second season officially underway, it’s important to know where exactly it fits into The Walking Dead‘s overall timeline. Having produced plenty of spinoff shows alongside undergoing several time skips, the franchise can be difficult to follow at the best of times, with Daryl Dixon being the next project to try and fit into this complicated series of events. Although the first season offered a pretty clear idea as to when it took place, season 2’s timeline was a mystery heading into the new batch of episodes, but the premiere thankfully provided some answers.
Unlike Dead City and The Ones Who Live‘s confusing timelines, Daryl Dixon is much more straightforward when it comes to working out roughly when it is set. The ties to the main series alongside some pretty significant updates help paint a picture of the show’s time frame, especially as there are no major jumps regarding the plot. The majority of season 1 happened chronologically, and while it’s hard to tell just how long it took the protagonists to complete their journey across France, season 2 seems to take place shortly after these events.
Daryl Dixon Season 2 Begins Only A Few Weeks After Season 1’s Ending
Daryl Confirmed He’d Only Been Training Laurent For Two Weeks
After waiting just over a year for the return of Daryl’s spinoff, the show seems to pick up pretty much where it left off, with just a few weeks passing in between. Daryl Dixon season 1’s ending left the protagonist unsure about whether to return to the US or stay in France and while enough time passed for him to make his decision, nothing else of significance happened in the Nest. During the episode’s opening exchange, Daryl is attempting to train Laurent on how to fight zombies, where he reveals “It’s only been two weeks” since they started.
While there is no guarantee that the training began as soon as season 1 ended, the spinoff points to very little time passing between each installment. With Losang suggesting Daryl hasn’t yet found a place at the Nest, it indicates that his arrival is still fairly recent. Isabelle hints towards this being the case by saying “Now that we’re here“, as though they are still new to the community. Therefore, it seems like Daryl Dixon season 2 takes just a few weeks after season 1, making the spinoff easy to follow, especially compared to the other shows.
Daryl Dixon Season 1 Began Only Three Or Four Weeks After The Walking Dead’s Series Finale
Not Much Time Passed Between The Walking Dead’s Final Episode & Daryl Dixon’s Premiere
The entirety of Daryl Dixon all seems to happen shortly after the main show’s conclusion, with season 1 taking place three to four weeks following the finale. Showrunner David Zabel confirmed this when he revealed that Daryl Dixon‘s timeline continues on from The Walking Dead, claiming “When we met Daryl at the beginning of this show, it was only three or four weeks after he left the Commonwealth on his bike.” His update helps explain that the spinoff covers most of Daryl’s journey after The Walking Dead season 11, with only a few weeks unaccounted for.
Zabel also stated that season 2 began only two or three months after the main show’s finale, indicating that the events of season 1 all happened within a month or two. Given Dead City takes place years in the future while The Ones Who Live covers multiple different time periods throughout its story, it’s nice to have a much simpler timeline when it comes to Daryl Dixon. Even if season 2 opts to include a time skip, so long as it’s clearly outlined, Daryl Dixon remains the most concise Walking Dead project, making it worth the watch.
