Carolina Panthers’ decision to bench last year’s no.1 overall draft pick after two games into the season may have raised some eyebrows. As Bryce Young becomes the first QB since 1967 to be dropped without injury concerns. However, looking at the Panthers’ start to their season and Young’s lackluster performances, this decision was long overdue.
Even though we don’t know for sure whether Panthers’ decision to drop Young stems from his color. It was indeed disrespectful to the former Heisman Trophy winner, as James Jones said on the same show, “We brought you in this offensive coach to help you, and you are giving up on me in two weeks. And you are basically saying it’s you, Bryce Young, it ain’t me in two weeks. That’s disrespectful to the young fella. That’s not helping the young fella, confidence-wise or not.
Well, the Panthers QB did speak about his confidence after Sunday’s horror show, “I draw my confidence from the Lord. I’m very blessed. I’m grateful for this challenge. Not an ideal start, but God does everything for a reason.” While the 22-year-old has found his role on the bench, he did point out the improvement he must bring into his games.
“Obviously, part of the position is being the game manager. Some bad instances of that on film today. I definitely take accountability for that,” shared the Panthers QB. But it wasn’t the last game only that tarnished his capabilities on the field, as Young completed only 31 of 56 passes for 244 yards and 3 interceptions to start his second season in the NFL.
With Andy Dalton named as the starting QB in Carolina, will he be able to change the fortunes of the Panthers, who seem like a lost cause this early into the new season?
Andy Dalton taking over Bryce Young in Carolina
As Bryce Young finds his new role on the bench in Carolina, it’s the “Red Rifle” Andy Dalton getting the nod ahead of him. Playing his 13th season in the NFL, Dalton talked about how he wasn’t sure about getting an opportunity while repaying the faith shown in him. Even though the 36-year-old is surprised to get the chance ahead of Young, he did speak about facing similar problems when he was in Cincinnati.
Young’s 8.9 total QBR in the last two games isn’t even the worst ever to be recorded in the NFL. As Dalton went through worse when he notched up 7.4 QBR to open his 2017 season with the Bengals. However, he also opened up on his worst game in the NFL, being against the Cleveland Browns in 2014. But why is that highlighted among all the games he has played over the years? Because the new QB1 in Carolina recorded a 3.1 QBR, which is horrific, to say the least.
However, the Carolina Panthers would be hoping they get the best out of Dalton instead of the horror shows he was part of. As the Panthers look for their first win of their season, will they manage to turn around their season before it’s too late? Only time will, as it’s all going south in Carolina.
