Emily In Paris creator Darren Star shook things up when he sent Lily Collins’ Emily Cooper to Rome at the end of season four. In an interview following the finale, he explained that he planted the seed back in the second season with Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu’s character, Sylvie Grateau, saying that Rome was her favorite city.

He wanted to mix things up. “I’d had it in my mind for a while that we’d spend some time in Rome but I’m not giving up on Paris. I look forward to the challenge of the juggling act of the show living in two cities.”

He also cleared up any confusion about the show’s title. It will not change to Emily In Rome as this is not a spin-off. It will be a fifth season. “She did not change her Instagram handle,” he clarified.

Star has a knack for creating lovable characters with lives we can all dream of. Series like Emily In Paris and Sex and the City are the perfect escapes. He centers his stories around strong women living in the most magnificent cities in the world as they combat love triangles and friendship dilemmas while wearing the best in designer couture. Though their lives may look picture-perfect, he never makes the road to finding love smoothly paved. There are always twists, turns, and jagged edges on the road to happily ever after.

As he said in an interview pegged to part one of season four, “I don’t think there’s much of a story once happily-ever-after happens. These are very passionate relationships and strong characters and what keeps me engaged is finding those obstacles that feel truly emotional.”
