Anne Hathaway opened up about her decision to stop drinking in a candid interview with Vanity Fair for its April issue.
The 41-year-old Oscar winner — who also disclosed she suffered a miscarriage in 2015 during the interview — revealed that abstaining from alcohol was part of her personal health transformation over the last five years.
‘I knew deep down it wasn’t for me,’ the star admitted.
‘And it just felt so extreme to have to say, “But none?’ But none,’ she continued. ‘If you’re allergic to something or have an anaphylactic reaction to something, you don’t argue with it. So I stopped arguing with it.’
Hathaway insisted that she wasn’t coming from a place of judgment towards anyone else.

‘It’s a path everybody has to walk for themselves,’ she explained. ‘My personal experience with it is that everything is better. For me, it was wallowing fuel. And I don’t like to wallow.’
She initially addressed this decision in January 2019, revealing her choice to stop imbibing was in order to be more present for her 3-year-old son.
‘I didn’t put (a drink) down because my drinking was a problem; I put it down because the way I drink leads me to have hangovers and those were the problem,’ she told Boston Common Magazine.
‘My last hangover lasted for five days. When I’m at a stage in my life where there is enough space for me to have a hangover, I’ll start drinking again, but that won’t be until my kid is out of the house.’
Nevertheless, the actress said she harbored no resentment towards parents who occasionally indulge in a few drinks. ‘
‘I just want to make this clear: Most people don’t have to do such an extreme thing. I don’t think drinking is bad,’ she explained.
“‘It’s just the way I do it — which I personally think is really fun and awesome — is just not the kind of fun and awesome that goes with having a child for me. But this isn’t a moralistic stance.’
The clarification came after she revealed she had stopped drinking during a January 2019 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

She playfully shared amusing hangover anecdotes before disclosing, once again, her decision to abstain from alcohol until her young son had grown up and moved out of the house.
‘I don’t totally love the way I (drink) and (my son is) getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings,’ Anne told the host.
‘I did one school run one day where I dropped him off at school, I wasn’t driving, but I was hungover and that was enough for me. I didn’t love that one.’
Meanwhile, in her Vanity Fair interview, Hathaway revealed that she experienced a miscarriage in 2015, before eventually welcoming her first child with husband Adam Shulman in March 2016.
The couple now has two sons: Jonathan, seven, and Jack, three.
During the time of the miscarriage, Hathaway was immersed in work, performing in a six-week, one-woman off-Broadway show titled Grounded.
‘The first time it didn’t work out for me. I was doing a play and I had to give birth onstage every night,’ she shared.
Although it is not clear when the miscarriage happened, the play – written by George Brant – ran for six weeks in April of 2015.

Hathaway first hinted at her fertility struggles in a 2019 Instagram post (pictured above)
‘It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine. I had to keep it real otherwise…. So when it did go well for me, having been on the other side of it – where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone – I wanted to let my sisters know, “You don’t have to always be graceful. I see you and I’ve been you.”‘ she added.
The star of Rachel Getting Married also made the decision to remove other unhealthy habits from her life as much as possible, such as minimizing her use of social media. ‘
‘I make a lot of my lifestyle choices in service of supporting mental health,’ she said.
‘I stopped participating in things that I know to be draining or can cause spirals. I actually don’t have a relationship with myself online.’
