The Boys Chase Crawford

He revealed he almost had a panic attack before filming the controversial scene

Even if you haven’t watched The Boys, there’s no way you haven’t heard about the insane sex scene between The Deep, played by Chase Crawford and an octopus. And yes, sadly you did read the right. The scene was certainly something, and Chase Crawford has now revealed what an effect the runup to filming *that* The Boys moment had on him.

During the third episode of last season, The Deep, who has aquatic telepathy and amphibious physiology abilities, had sex with an octopus named Ambrosius. The actor revealed that he “would have” had second thoughts about joining the cast of The Boys if he had known about having to do a sex scene with an octopus.

He admitted: “It’s so funny and brilliant now, but when that came up, I was like, “Oh God, how’s this going to work?.” And whilst he finds the scenes funny now, during the runup he felt in “total denial” about what he was going to have to do, admitting: “And then it got 24 hours out from the first day I had to shoot it and I almost had a panic attack.”

“I called Kripke — he’s so great. He’s got a million things going on but his door’s always open. So, I was worried about the scene. I’m like, “How are we gonna do this? What are the angles gonna be? How naked do I have to be?” He changed one shot for me. And it was great.” An intimacy co-ordinator was not used for the octopus scene but it was treated like a closed set.

He added: “But they treated it like, “quiet everyone, clear out” – a closed set. But yeah, just the act of picking up the octopus and getting a wet octopus in the bed was so funny and weird. And then it doesn’t come out for a year almost, and you’re like, ‘How is this going to be received?’” I’d say it was received with a mix of intrigue and horror…
