Justice League and Rebel Moon filmmaker Zack Snyder reacts to Henry Cavill’s Deadpool & Wolverine cameo, marking it as his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Phase 5 is currently enjoying its biggest success with the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring the return of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as their respective Marvel heroes. Like many other superhero movies, there were several Easter eggs and references in Deadpool & Wolverine, as well as cameos from major actors.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder, who cast Cavill as Superman for 2013’s Man of Steel, was asked if he had heard about the British star appearing in Deadpool & Wolverine as a Wolverine variant. Snyder replied, “I haven’t seen it yet, but I did hear about it. Sounds fun.” When the trade brought up how Wade Wilson joked that Marvel Studios would treat Cavill better “than the studio down the street,” Snyder didn’t respond but grinned. Then, asked if he was frustrated that Cavill’s Superman was sidelined by DC, Snyder said:
Well, Henry is an amazing Superman to me, obviously. I hired him. I wanted him to be Superman. So any coins left on the table are unfortunate, and in that way, it would be great to have more Henry. I always think you could have more Henry.
Will Henry Cavill Return To The MCU?
For The Time Being, It Seems Unlikely
At the time of this story’s publication, Cavill has not addressed his Deadpool & Wolverine cameo, nor has he talked about future MCU appearances. However, it is worth asking whether his cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine could actually lead to Cavill being cast as the iconic X-Men hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. Cavill as Wolverine has been a popular fan cast for quite some time, which is why his Deadpool & Wolverine cameo was so well-received.
While it would be fun to see Cavill as Wolverine again, it is very unlikely to happen, as the franchise will probably have Jackman back as Logan a few more times in The Multiverse Saga. Since Marvel is rebooting the X-Men, there will have to be a new Wolverine at some point. That could potentially be the time when Cavill is brought into the franchise as Wolverine full-time if the superhero genre is something he is interested in revisiting.
Kevin Feige has also made it clear that when they recast Wolverine for the MCU, it will be a very different take on the character, which could suggest a unique direction for the casting. It’s also possible that the MCU will utilize Laura Kinney as the new Wolverine, since she did carry the title in the comics, especially if they bring back Dafne Keen after Deadpool & Wolverine. For now, however, the world will have to wait and see what happens.
Who Could Be The MCU’s New Wolverine
There Are Plenty Of Good Candidates
It is still worth asking who will actually be the MCU’s new Wolverine, as there are a number of directions they could go with the character in the franchise. If Marvel Studios is looking to tap a major star to headline the role and want to look into popular fan casting ideas, this could finally be the perfect opportunity to cast Daniel Radcliffe as the new Wolverine for the MCU timeline. Since Radcliffe is seemingly open to it, he would also be a refreshing choice and someone who could depict a younger Logan.
For a more traditional Wolverine, Cavill would be the ideal choice and would give the former DCEU actor a new shot at another superhero gig that could run for several years. It’s worth remembering that technically, there has already been a major Easter egg to Wolverine in the Sacred Timeline, as She-Hulk: Attorney at Law alluded to a man with metal claws being out there in the world. If the MCU wants to run with a Wolverine who is already established in this continuity, someone of Cavill’s caliber would be suitable.
However, with Keen already being part of the Disney family, the MCU could finally evolve Laura into the next Wolverine and even have Jackman around after Phase 6. Jackman could play a retired Logan, perhaps someone who is a teacher now at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, while Laura takes over his title. As the MCU is also trying to find ways to diversify its hero line-up in the franchise, having a female Wolverine would be perfect for Phase 7 and beyond.
Henry Cavill’s Upcoming Projects Explained
The Actor Has A Few Things In The Works After Deadpool & Wolverine
As much of a fan-favorite as Cavill is for Wolverine, the actor already has a number of major projects coming up. Cavill is set to star as the lead in the Highlander reboot, which is reportedly set to start production in early 2025. After having been attached to the new Highlander film since May 2021, it has been a long time coming, as filming is finally looking to get underway.
But one of the biggest gigs in Cavill’s career that is being worked on is the live-action Warhammer 40,000 adaptation for Amazon Studios. Not only will Cavill star in a series based on the game, he will also be an executive producer of the potential film and TV franchise, since the actor is known for being a massive Warhammer fan. Cavill is also reuniting with director Guy Ritchie as the actor will be seen in the filmmaker’s upcoming film, In The Grey, set to release in January 2025.
Even if Cavill were not to get cast as the MCU’s main Wolverine, the Man of Steel star is definitely not lacking for work for the next few years. It’s also possible that his appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine was his one and only time showing up in the MCU, as Cavill may not necessarily be looking for another superhero role right now. But until Cavill says something himself, the world will have to wait and see if Wolverine is part of his future after Deadpool & Wolverine.
