Jason Momoa talks about his character in Game of Thrones.
While many know Jason Momoa as Aquaman from DCEU, his journey to Hollywood stardom kickstarted with his breakout role on HBO’s Game of Thrones, in which he played the Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo. While his role came to an end with the first season, his character garnered instant attention among viewers and fans alike.
Momoa’s Drogo had several intimate scenes with Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen since the series was infamous for its graphic, violent, and gore content. However, the actor was not happy with what he did with Clarke, which he addressed in an old interview.
Jason Momoa Talks About His Character in Game of Thrones
The success of the popular Game of Thrones series spawned a franchise, featuring a vast array of characters, high-quality production, impressive performances, and intriguing storylines among other elements.
Given that many characters enjoyed their spotlight over the eight seasons, Jason Momoa‘s Khal Drogo, for sure, left a grave impact on the audiences. While the Aquaman star did his best to portray the formidable Dothraki warlord in full glory, he was not really happy with the things that his character did to Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen.
When asked about his opinions on the treatment of women in the R-rated show, he told a New York Times interview,
“Well, it was important to depict Drogo and his style. You’re playing someone that’s like Genghis Khan. It was a really, really, really hard thing to do.”
He continued,
“But my job was to play something like that, and it’s not a nice thing, and it’s what that character was. It’s not my job to go, ‘Would I not do it?’ I’ve never really been questioned about ‘Do you regret playing a role?’ We’ll put it this way: I already did it. Not doing it again.”
From his statement, it’s clear that he would carefully consider before taking such a role, but maintained his stance of portraying the character to its best. His performance was extremely remarkable, which contributed to catapulting him to fame. Whereas, his co-star feels grateful for sharing the intimate scenes with the Fast X actor.
Emilia Clarke Revealed Her Experience Working With Jason Momoa in Game of Thrones
Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones
Clarke, who shared several intimate moments with the Dune star, expressed her gratitude for working with him, especially considering the experiences she had after the show’s success.
In an appearance on Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard, she revealed that the show was her first acting gig, which would apparently have made things difficult, especially filming those intimate moments. However, her co-star made sure to make her comfortable with her compassion and caring attitude.
She revealed,
“It’s only now that I realize how fortunate I was with that because that could have gone many, many, many different ways. He was always like, ‘Can we get her a f–king robe? She’s shivering!’”
She has nothing but positive words for her co-star as she added, “He was so kind and considerate and cared about me as a human being.”
Despite the complex on-screen relationship, Momoa’s genuine concern reached the Terminator Genisys star’s heart. She has huge respect for him. While the duo worked together only in the first season, Clarke went on to appear throughout all eight seasons, portraying her iconic character.
The show is available on Max.
