In other words, can a dedicated man fighting against the current ever win?
If Henry Cavill ’s acting career could be described in one line, that line would be, “A man books a dream role in his favorite franchise, pours his heart and soul into delivering the perfect adaptation, faces ignorant executives, and leaves the project.” We’ve seen this exact scenario unfold several times already, and each time, it’s a proper heartbreak for the franchise and Cavill’s fans and the actor himself.
Now, the actor is taking on the lead role in the adaptation of his all-time favorite franchise: Warhammer 40,000. Will the Cavill curse strike again?
Henry Cavill Adores Warhammer 40K
A large part of why Cavill is so beloved by fans, especially men, is that he’s Hollywood’s proudest and most shredded nerd. The actor never shies away from his hobbies and speaks about them passionately and openly, thus single-handedly lifting the stigma on them. Cavill has enough professional weight, reputation, looks, and appeal to normalize hobbies that have long been considered “nerdy” and “childish.”
While a huge fan of many franchises, Henry Cavill has always been vocal about his all-time favorite world — that of Warhammer 40K. It’s no one’s secret that the actor has been enchanted by this dark and brutal world of never-ending war since his childhood, and his passion for it convinced all WH40K fans in one thing: there’s not a single other person who could make a more faithful screen adaptation than him.
Warhammer 40K Vs. Cavill’s Curse
Fortunately for Henry Cavill, his fans, and Warhammer 40K enjoyers, the star has long been confirmed to lead a TV show adaptation. Unfortunately for the same group of people, this doesn’t eliminate the unfortunate factor of the “Cavill’s curse” — the malignant phenomenon that has previously claimed his Superman and Geralt of Rivia roles. No one is safe from terrible adaptations, but Cavill has a history of that.
Here’s the deal. On the one hand, we have the actor’s own words that it will be he who “guides the Warhammer Cinematic Universe.” That sounds like Cavill could become the new live-action franchise’s James Gunn, and if that turns out to be true, the WH40K adaptations couldn’t have possibly fallen into better hands.
On the other hand, there have already been rumors about Amazon demanding significant lore changes which led to increasing frustration on Cavill’s part. If those whispers have even a modicum of truth to them, we might very well witness yet another great franchise fall victim to the infamous curse… But at least we know that Henry Cavill will fight until the end before he’s ready to give up on his dream.
May the God-Emperor guide this man and protect him from others’ corporate greed, truly.
