Though Lord Danbury didn’t appear in Bridgerton, he played an important role in the Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story spinoff. Premiering in 2020, the Netflix original historical romance series Bridgerton explores the lives of the Bridgerton siblings as they navigate the royal social scene during England’s Regency Era. The overwhelming popularity of the series based on Julia Quinn’s novels warranted a spinoff in 2023, and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story further delved into the backstory of the titular monarch and popular supporting characters like Lady Agatha Danbury. Praised for the anachronistic approach to history, the Bridgerton franchise was an instant hit because of its lavish production design and steamy romance.

While just as well-received as its predecessor, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story introduced several characters who weren’t featured in Bridgerton and elaborated upon the long and arduous road that the main characters took to get to where they are in the main series. Though Lord Danbury (Cyril Nri) was just one small part of the cast of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, his brief storyline had a massive impact on the future and on the life of Lady Danbury ( in particular. Even though he didn’t appear in Bridgerton, Lord Danbury’s importance is felt through every season.

Lord Danbury Died Before The Events Of Bridgerton

Lord and Lady Danbury look on in Queen Charlotte

The plain and simple reason why Lord Herman Danbury never appeared in Bridgerton was that he actually died long before the events of the show. The somewhat despotic lord met his end following a successful ball that was organized by his young wife, Lady Agatha Danbury (played by Arsema Thomas in Queen Charlotte). As always, the lord took credit for Agatha’s personal friendship with young Queen Charlotte (India Ria Amarteifio) which resulted in the queen and king actually attending the function. Flush with his own perceived success, in Queen Charlotte season 1, episode 3, “Even Days”, Lord Danbury forced himself upon his wife once again and promptly died.

Before his death, the couple had sired four children who are also missing entirely from Bridgerton and are rarely even referenced. In the main series, the older Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) explained that her children were simply “continents away” though she never offered much in the way of specifics. Despite the fact that Lady Danbury is a constant presence in the Bridgerton series, none of her flashbacks included Lord Danbury due in large part to the fact that she clearly despised the man, and wasn’t entirely broken up when he met his premature end.

Lady Danbury Became A Powerful Bridgerton Character After Her Husband’s Death

The key to Lord Danbury’s importance in Bridgerton is not so much what he did, but what role he played in the rise of Lady Danbury. The couple shared a loveless marriage, and his violent sexual proclivities led to Lady Danbury being somewhat hardened when it came to romance. Even after his death, Lady Danbury refused to marry again which caused her trouble as a woman living during that period of English history. However, having formed a strong friendship with Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury helped pave the way for people of color in the royal court, and secured her title despite not being associated with a powerful man.
