The Targaryens’ most shameful secret is their biggest advantage in the approaching war.
House of the Dragon season 2 still has scarce chances to fully introduce the highly anticipated war between the Greens and the Blacks, though even now both sides have no other choice but to turn to their dynasty’s darkest secret that might get them a helping hand in the upcoming battles.
The show’s latest episodes finally catch Rhaenyra brought into action after a long time of idling around since she’s more than determined to find some support from House Targaryen’s members who have never been recognised.
However, many of them may soon enter the main stage, and their role now seems to be a key to one of the sides’ success.
House of the Dragon has been long hinting at other Targaryens scattered across Westeros with no possibility of claiming their rights just because their blood is only half royal.
The second season’s episodes 5 and 6 see Rhaenyra recognising that Dragonseeds, aka Targaryen bastards that were never meant to become a part of the family anyway, may come as a huge help for her forces in the approaching war with the Greens.
Since Dragonseeds are at least partially of dragon blood, it is believed that they’re likely to claim a dragon which doesn’t have a rider so far.
In episode 5, Jacaerys tells his mother that the Blacks don’t necessarily need to look for Dragonseeds among common people as some of the family members didn’t follow the primary rule of marrying their closest relative, but instead wedded someone else belonging to other powerful houses in Westeros.
Those who can prove their Targaryen descent, mixed with another wealthy family’s origin, may be legitimate to eventually have a dragon to themselves, which does give a huge profit for whatever team a future rider sides with.
In House of the Dragon, some of the pivotal new game players have already made an entrance in earlier episodes. The show has repeatedly introduced Addam and Alyn of Hull, Lord Corlys Velaryon’s bastards, Hugh Hammer whose relation to the Targaryens hasn’t been established yet, and Ulf the White who claims to be Aegon II’s uncle.
According to what George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood suggests, all of them will eventually opt for fighting with Rhaenyra against the Greens, guaranteeing the Blacks much better positions before it’s decided who will rule Westeros.
Still, considering how prone House of the Dragon is to constantly neglecting canons established by Fire & Blood, there’s a good chance that everything will change once the full-scale war does begin.
