We’ve seen over 20 dragons in the Game of Thrones prequel, but which of them are the toughest?
10. Sunfyre
Aegon II Targaryen’s dragon, Sunfyre is often referred to as the most beautiful dragon thanks to his golden scales and flame. Sunfyre is likely one of the younger dragons: though his origins haven’t been confirmed, it seems that his egg was put in Aegon’s cradle. Currently, the dragon is in a dire state after Aemond’s betrayal.9. Syrax
Rhaenyra Targaryen’s most trusted ally, Syrax, too, has also likely been with her since the cradle. The yellow dragon was named after a Valarian goddess and was with Rhaenyra through her highs and lows, following her closely. We’re yet to see major feats from Syrax, but seeing her devotion to her mistress, it won’t take long.
8. Dreamfyre
A relatively old dragon, Dreamfyre has had two riders in her life. First, the blue-and-silver dragon was bonded by Rhaena Targaryen, and stayed with her through her terminal illness. After Rhaena’s death, Dreamfyre left Harrenhall and, after years of being riderless, was claimed by Helaena Targaryen who rides her now.
7. Seasmoke
While many dragons are celebrated for their raw power, size, and strength, Seasmoke is quite the opposite. The silvery dragon is famous for his smaller size and nimble flying techniques and capable of feats larger dragons can’t achieve. His only known rider, Laenor Velaryon, used Seasmoke’s unique traits to his advantage.
6. Meleys
On the contrary, Meleys has always been one of the largest dragons, especially before the Dance. Nicknamed the Red Queen for her terrifying colors — bloody red and copper — Meleys was first bonded by Alyssa Targaryen and then, after her first rider’s death, claimed by Rhaenys Targaryen who went to great lengths to free her.
5. Caraxes
Another red dragon, Caraxes is widely known as the Blood Wyrm. Aggressive and ruthless, this beast takes full advantage of the terror he instills — and in battle, he makes use of his unique membranes that make maneuring easier. Caraxes was claimed by Daemon Targaryen after his first rider Aemon Targaryen’s death.
4. The Cannibal
Few bonded dragons can compare in might with ancient wild dragons like The Cannibal. Speculated to be the oldest wild dragon in Westeros, those who tried to claim The Cannibal died harrowing deaths. This black dragon takes no prisoner among humans and other dragons alike: he didn’t earn his nickname out of nowhere.
3. Vermithor
The combination of raw power, fearful disposition, and huge size, Vermithor — also known as the Bronze Fury — has always been the second-largest and oldest dragon alive. The terrifying beast shared the cradle with Jaehaerys Targaryen who later became his rider. After his death, Vermithor lived alone in his Dragonstone cave.
2. Vhagar
Another dragon named after a Valyrian god, Vhagar is the scariest dragon alive. She easily surpasses everyone else in size and might, making her a desired prize for many dragonriders. Throughout her long life, Vhagar has flown with Visenya and Baelon Targaryens, then Laena Velaryon, and finally, Aemond Targaryen.
1. Balerion
The biggest and most powerful dragon Westeros has ever seen, Balerion aka the Black Dread arrived there with Aegon the Conqueror. After the first King died, Balerion was claimed by his successors — Maegor, Aerea, and Viserys Targaryens. Balerion has won countless battles and yet, he’s supposedly the only dragon to have died of old age. In his final days, he was so large he couldn’t even take to the sky.
