The Herogasm episode from Season 3 will be etched into the annals of shock-value TV history, as it took viewers on a wild ride with a scene that’ll stick to your mind like gum on a shoe.

Chace Crawford, who portrayed Kevin Moskowitz / The Deep, himself confessed in a recent Rolling Stone tell-all that the thought of filming that infamous octopus s*x scene had him nearly swimming in a sea of “panic”. The Texas-born actor mentioned that there was an intimacy coordinator on the show for that scene, but “not with the octopus”.

In the jaw-dropping The Boys episode (Herogasm) of Season 3, viewers were treated to the sight of Chace Crawford’s character engaging in some steamy action with an octopus (Ambrosius, the cephalopod wife of The Deep), voiced by none other than the talented Tilda Swinton. Crawford recently opened up about his initial nerves before filming this bizarre s*x scene.

The actor, 38, who rose to fame as Nate Archibald in Gossip Girl, admitted that he almost had a panic attack when he first learned about the scene. Speaking to Rolling Stone, he revealed his concerns to showrunner Eric Kripke, who was understanding and accommodating:

I was in total denial about it. And then it got 24 hours out from the first day I had to shoot it and I almost had a panic attack. I called Kripke – he’s so great. He’s got a million things going on but his door’s always open. So I was worried about the scene. I’m like, ‘How are we gonna do this? What are the angles gonna be? How n*ked do I have to be?’

When asked about the filming process, Crawford explained that there was no intimacy coordinator present for the scene with the octopus, but the set was treated like a closed set to maintain privacy. He described the experience of shooting the scene as both funny and weird, but ultimately, he was relieved to see that fans loved it. To quote him:

We have one on set. But not with the octopus. But they treated it like, ‘quiet everyone, clear out’ – a closed set. But yeah, just the act of picking up the octopus and getting a wet octopus in the bed was so funny and weird. And then it doesn’t come out for a year almost, and you’re like, ‘How is this going to be received?’ But everyone loved it.

The casting of Swinton as the voice of Ambrosius added another layer of hilarity to the scene.

Eric Kripke Hailed Tilda Swinton’s Contribution to The Boys

Last month, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke expressed his delight at Tilda Swinton’s involvement, noting that her unique voice brought an extra level of humor and authenticity to the absurd situation. The former jokingly stated (via Variety):

We need the classiest, Oscar-winningest, British actress we can get our hands on. And that’s a really short list. And Dame Judi Dench was unavailable.

Even Chace Crawford expressed his delight at the participation of the Doctor Strange actress in the satirical superhero series. He told CinemaBlend:

When they said that Tilda Swinton was doing it, I just started crying laughing because she must have a great sense of humor to want to come and play with us in this insane scene and give life to Ambrosius, finally. And it makes the scene so much funnier and real.

All things considered, The Boys—which has received eight Primetime Emmy Award nominations—keeps pushing the envelope and astonishing audiences with its impressive blend of dark humor and twisted situations.

Despite initial worries, Crawford and his fellow cast members have embraced the show’s bold choices, resulting in unforgettable moments like the octopus scene in Season 3.

The fourth season of the show premiered on June 13, 2024.

The Boys is available on Amazon Prime Video.
