They broke furniture whilst filming one specific scene

Bridgerton is known for its STEAMY scenes and the new season three is definitely no exception. In fact, this season actually has FOUR TIMES more sex scenes than last season with the first four episodes alone containing more than six minutes of full-on sex.

This means that Nicola Coughlan who plays Penelope Featherington has spoken an awful lot about all the spicy scenes and what it was like to film them. Including her requesting to be “very naked” as a “fuck you’ to body shamers.

So, this is everything Nicola Coughlan has said about the sex scenes in Bridgerton season three:

The sex scenes were one of the things she enjoyed the most

Although Nicola revealed that she found the whole thing “intimidating” she also said that filming the sex scenes were her favourite. “But the sex scenes were one of the things I enjoyed most,” she said.

“Luke and I had a real hand in what we did and how it came across. Thankfully we had that physical comfort with one another, so it ended up being a really beautiful thing.”

She had to request a ‘PG version’ of the season to show her family

With the amount of sex this season, Nicola revealed that she had to request a PG version of the show for her family. “It’s literally written into my contract. People think I’m saying it as a joke. I grew up Irish Catholic, that’s just not how we vibe.”

She chose to be ‘very naked’ during the sex scenes as a ‘fuck you’ to body shamers

Nicola Coughlan revealed that it was her own choice to be “very naked” in the show as a “fuck you” to body shamers. In an interview with Stylist, she said: “I specifically asked for certain lines and moments to be included. There’s one scene where I’m very naked on camera, and that was my idea, my choice. It just felt like the biggest ‘fuck you’ to all the conversation surrounding my body; it was amazingly empowering. I felt beautiful in the moment, and I thought: ‘When I’m 80, I want to look back on this and remember how fucking hot I looked!’”

They broke furniture whilst filming a steamy scene

Speaking to Capital Breakfast, about the Bridgerton sex scenes, Nicola admitted that she and Luke broke furniture whilst filming one of the spicy scenes.”It snapped and I have a picture of the snap,” she said, however, she didn’t reveal what the piece of furniture was.

“It’s not a bed” she confirmed and said it was something you’d see in the past more than the present. “We did break it during a sexy scene because we were really going for it. We thought it was so hot.”

Nicola was then asked whether it was an item you’d find in a bedroom, and she said “Maybe.” She confirmed it could also be found in a living room, but most probably not a kitchen “depending on how fancy your kitchen is.”

‘There are bonking opportunities for all’

Speaking about there being sex across the board in the season and not just for them, Luke said: “I feel like you’re expecting that with this show, but I think we’ve really ramped it up. It’s steamy across the board — there’s lots of people across the Ton that are at it, not just us.”

Nicola then added: “There are bonking opportunities for all.”

During filming a sex scene they didn’t hear the director shout cut and carried on

In an interview with Luke, Nicola describes a time filming one of the sex scenes when the director called cut and they didn’t hear them so they carried on. “We didn’t know though they actually called cut and we couldn’t hear them. So they were looking at us like what are they doing and the director had to come over and be like ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING? I told you to stop!’.”

She would have ‘struggled’ to do the sex scenes with anyone else

Okay but I need them to be in love in real life. “Luke and I are really good partners and we had a lot of trust in one another,” Nicola told Marie Claire Australia.

“I would have struggled to do it with someone else, because we could talk about it and text about it and we had a lot of say in how those scenes were done.”

‘We had an amazing intimacy coordinator’

When asked about whether she was scared of the sex scenes, Nicola said: “I think more in the lead-up I was scared. Once we actually got into it we had an amazing intimacy coordinator called Lizzie Talbot who did seasons one and two, and we then really just communicated with one another about it.”

She also said that the team also let her and Luke have a say: “Jess let us have a say and there were certain things that we wanted included in the scenes. I don’t think we said no to anything we just said ‘this would be important’ and she was like ‘For sure’. Which is amazing because you feel in the driver’s seat then and it’s not stagnant it’s not like kiss for three seconds, then move your hand, like we could have a flow with it so it felt natural and it should feel real to the audience.”

She said the sex scenes are ‘so romantic, sweet and sexy’

Although Nicola was nervous to watch all the sex scenes back, she said they left her feeling “amazing”. “I watched them and went ‘I feel amazing’, they’re so romantic, they’re so sweet, they’re so sexy, they’re properly like hot and then they’re funny.”
