In House of the Dragon season 2, Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) is the King of Westeros, having succeeded his father Viserys I Targaryen. However, his crowing leads to the civil war known as Dance of the Dragons, which sees Aegon II fight with his half-sister, Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma D’Arcy.

The third episode of season 2 builds up to the impending battle between the siblings. In the episode, Aegon II is seen suited in his battle armor, which resembles that of Aegon I Targaryen, also known as Aegon the Conqueror. The latter was the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, having united them during his conquest of Westeros.

In the process, the Conqueror had gained the reputation of a fearsome warrior. However, Aegon II is in complete contrast to his predecessor, being a deprived hedonist whose skills and capability as a leader are often undermined. During the third episode of season 2, fans noted how Aegon the Conqueror’s armor did not fit Aegon II properly, resulting in them drawing their own conclusions about its metaphorical meaning.

The armor motif also ties in with the episode’s climatic revelation where Alicent learns that she misinterpreted Viserys’ prophecy about the Prince That Was Promised.
