The Targaryens’ dynasty is getting (unofficially) bigger.
House of the Dragon ’s season 2 may still be quite far away from the long-promised ruthless war between the Blacks and the Greens, yet the show has already started introducing the big battle’s major participants.
Episode 1 saw Lord Corlys Velaryon’s bastard Addam of Hull coming up on the main stage to later on serve his family as a dragon rider in the epic fight (at least George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood suggests so).
The second season’s episode 3 titled The Burning Mill features another unexpected Targaryen, and his role in the upcoming war actually causes a much bigger controversy than any other illegitimate child’s.
House of the Dragon’s season 2 episode 3 captures King’s Landing’s citizen Ulf having a night out with friends in some kind of local pub and reassuring everyone that he’s actually Jaehaerys I’s grandson and thus another uncle to Rhaenyra.
Nobody seems to believe him while Ulf urges his friends to keep his revelation a secret since the Greens may consider it a reason for beheading him.
However, House of the Dragon once again altered yet another storyline from Fire & Blood revealing Ulf’s exact origin. In the original novel, the character has no clue about how exactly he’s connected to the dynasty. Despite this, he’s still considered a Dragonseed, which is a common term for all of the Targaryens’ bastards.
Though Ulf’s claims in the short scene so far look pretty unconvincing to both his friends and the show’s viewers, the character’s words still contained a major spoiler about how Ulf will use his origin to fight for his alleged family in the approaching war.
After revealing that he has Targaryen blood flowing in his veins, Ulf stresses that he considers Rhaenyra the only rightful heir to the Iron Throne and thus will support her no matter what.
It’s not clear yet whether the show will stick to the original storyline or will rather opt for changing it, but in the novel Ulf indeed joins the Blacks claiming a dragon named Silverwing and playing a crucial role in the Battle of the Gullet, as well as in the First and Second Battles of Tumbleton.
However, the First Battle of Tumbleton will see Ulf suddenly changing his mind and betraying Rhaenyra, all because he gets tempted by a title of the Lord of Bitterbridge that Daeron Targaryen promises him.
There’s so far no evidence of Ulf’s potential frequent presence in the current season, but House of the Dragon may have just paved the way for the character in the next third season which might show yet another Dragonseed from a completely different perspective compared to the way the original book described him.
