What’s wrong with the series’ main character?

The Buccaneers has already caused quite a stir because of its premise, which seems to be far from fully comprehensible. The ensemble cast show has so many subplots that it’s hard to focus on them all, especially since the most intriguing ones take the writers years to address.

For example, we still don’t know what’s really wrong with Lord James Seadown and why he’s behaving the way he is, torturing Jinny and Lizzy. And what about Richard and Laura Testvalley? Do they have some kind of twisted personal relationship that “no one will understand”?

These questions tear the audience to pieces, and instead of answering them, the writers make the viewers hate the central characters of the show. Yes, we are talking about all this Nan nonsense that has been going on since the beginning of the drama.

At first, we seem to like Nan and sympathize with her as we learn her secrets and get to understand her freedom-loving personality. But as we take a closer look at her and see how she treats other people, we start to feel less and less positive about her.

What’s Wrong With Nan in The Buccaneers?

The show begins with a spark between Nan and Guy. But later we find out about Theo and witness another spark, now between Theo and Nan. The ridiculous love triangle is at the center of the show for several episodes, and what makes it even worse is that Nan seems to be totally comfortable with the situation she ended up in.

Yes, sure, we see her frustration sometimes, but it goes away so easily after one of the male leads kisses her. One moment she’s worried about marrying Theo, the next – she thinks it’s the best decision she’s ever made.

Fans of the show are actually thinking about letting go of the main storyline which includes Nan and focusing on secondary characters whose lives already seem far more compelling.

“Nan isn’t an endearing character. The more I watch this show the less I want to because Nan is not likable. I have started to cheer for a happy ending for the side characters like Lizzy, Mabel, and even Mrs. St George,” Redditor Wuttmutt said.

For example, after the beautiful and heartfelt kitchen scene, the audience now thinks that the show can benefit from making Guy and Lizzy a couple. Now, Lizzy certainly deserves some happiness at this point after everything she has been through.

And the thing about Theo is that at first he seemed so insecure about himself because of his status (well, being a duke comes with a long list of responsibilities), and after meeting Nan he finally seems quite happy. But the last few episodes have shown us that he is not the black sheep we thought he was.

The way he behaved at the poker game and the way he stood up to his mother when she said he couldn’t marry Nan perfectly show that he is capable of much more than he thinks. And he doesn’t need the inconsistent 17-year-old girl as his wife.
