The Boys creator Eric Kripke reveals whether it was Jack Quaid sporting the Webweaver suit in season 4, episode 6. With just two episodes left to go in the season, The Boys season 4 is reaching its conclusion. Each episode so far has come with characteristically shocking scenes, with the most recent episode including a freakishly sexual scene where Hughie masquerades as Spider-Man parody character Webweaver, who has been enlisted as the “sidekick” for Tek Knight, the show’s lampoon of Batman.

Speaking with Collider, Kripke reveals whether Quaid is really in the Webweaver suit while playing Hughie in episode 6. According to the creator, it was really Quaid underneath the mask and spandex during the entirety of the scene. The reason for this choice is “all credit to Jack and his dedication,” according to Kripke. The showrunner went on to note that Quaid never said that “none of this has to be [him]” in the suit nor suggested a stunt double and for him to be inserted with ADR later. That is all credit to Jack and his dedication. That is Jack in that suit, the whole f*cking time. At no point, did it even occur to Jack to say, ‘You know, none of this has to be me. I could just voice it later.’ Jack wanted it to be his real reaction, so that is Jack under the mask, literally the entire time.

Episodes 5 & 6 Put Hughie Through The Ringer

The scene in question occurs when Hughie attends a function with powerful people while dressed as Webweaver, posing as the gossamer-producing superhero. Hughie sports Webweaver’s full suit nearly the entire time, as he is lured into a sex dungeon by Tek Knight. Because of his masking, Kripke is right in suggesting that Quaid could have easily requested a stunt double and done all of his lines after the fact. In fact, it is not until the very end of the sequence that Hughie’s Webweaver mask is taken off to reveal his true identity, necessitating Quaid.

While Tek’s cave sequence is excessively sexual, it also serves an important purpose in Hughie’s arc in season 4. As the seasons of The Boys progress, Hughie becomes increasingly more ingratiated with the Supes that surround him. This kicks off in The Boys season 3, when Hughie first starts taking Temp V. The Boys season 4 proves that even when Hughie is not on V, he has enmeshed himself enough that he is still a highly influential figure.

Hughie’s wild scenes in The Boys season 4, episode 6 also arrive after one of the more genuinely emotional scenes for the character. In the previous episode, Hughie and his once-estranged mother face the challenge of having to kill Hughie’s father via lethal injection after his Compound V-induced superpowers left him accidentally murdering people in a disoriented dementia state. Annie points out in episode 6 that Hughie has gone through a lot recently, regretting putting him through the Tek Knight risks. It will be interesting to see how Hughie continues to struggle and recover in the final two episodes.
