Fans say the show needs a lot more than flashy visuals to be successful.
Considering the amount of controversy surrounding The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, there are perhaps only a few things that the series undeniably stands out with, one of which is that the project is officially the most expensive television series ever created (for now).
With just the rights acquisition reportedly costing $250 million and the final budget coming in at around $465 million, it is indeed a significant investment that the creators are taking very seriously.
Morfydd Clark, who portrays Galadriel in the series, revealed in a recent interview with Deadline that she was stunned to learn the amount of money that “[had] been put into a piece of art”. She recalls being impressed by the set, as “you “did feel” the scale of the budget upon arriving.
Other actors also expressed their admiration for the attention to detail, such as Owain Arthur, who played the dwarf prince Durin, said he had never seen anything like it in film or television and even liked his prosthetic nose and beard.
While Ismael Cruz Córdova, who played the elf Arondir, mistook the fake lichen on the rocks for real, despite growing up in the mountains, it was so realistic.
Still, fans do not really buy the actors’ excitement, believing it to be just a marketing strategy because they are tired of hearing about how expensive Rings of Power is.
They say that the only impressive thing is how the creators managed to do so little with so much money, as the first season of the show ended up being quite underwhelming.
According to them, while most of the visuals look impressive, in some cases they look worse than Peter Jackson’s two-decade-old Lord of the Rings trilogy, and aside from the effects, the show lacks in almost every other aspect, such as story or character development.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 release date has not been announced, but it’s expected sometime in 2024.
