Deadpool & Wolverine has been heavily marketed since its initial announcement, with the official campaign kicking off during last year’s Super Bowl with the release of the first trailer. Much of the “unofficial” information related to the movie circulated on social media and leaker subreddits.

Some of the wildest rumors included cameos by the British royal family and Taylor Swift playing Lady Deadpool.

Taylor Swift was initially rumored to appear in the movie as Dazzler. When it was confirmed that Dazzler wouldn’t be in the film, speculation shifted to her playing the Lady Deadpool variant, a role that ultimately went to Blake Lively.

Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds never confirmed these rumors, but they also didn’t go out of their way to debunk them. In fact, they often hinted and suggested that Swift might appear in the movie. Marvel Studios relied on social media to fuel these speculations. In a recent interview with Variety, Levy clarified that Swift was never intended to be part of the movie but thanked the Internet for protecting the film’s secrets by spreading rumors.

That was one of the loudest rumors that came out of nowhere. It was never true. Thank you, internet, for building such a smokescreen of rumors and half-truths so that no one ever knew what was going to happen.

I must mention again that the rumors didn’t arise entirely out of nowhere. Although casting Swift seemed random, it was partly due to her connection to the Reynolds family. The movie’s official marketing campaign further fueled these rumors by incorporating hidden hints and references, adding to the speculation.
